More Europeans joining..

Just to add a non-team related post..

The past few months, the number of europeans that registered gradually closed in on the number of US crunchers. It`s a matter of days before the official European participation will top any other geographical categorisation. Not that it matters ofcourse :)

That said, big ups to TeamOnline, they`re really showing off laltely! Congratz!

Re: More Europeans joining..

a0a --

Thanks -- "My Online Team" is happy to see new members from all nations participating in this humanitarian effort. And yes, we have been having fun promoting the project within our team, and, we hope our enthusiasm will spread to other teams and other unaffiliated crunchers. We are in awe of the numbers that you SlashDot'ers have brought to the grid -- just remember that we will be nipping at your heals in short order -- LOL.

Kind Regards,

Re: More Europeans joining.hing Graham!

Sure thing Graham :)

But what I really meant is that the number of registered crunchers from Europe now tops the number of crunchers from the US! Yay for Europe and supporting the good cause!

Ok, nothing to see here, crunch on!

Re: More Europeans joining.hing Graham!

Strange thing too. World wide it seems as though the actual number of members is much smaller than the number of people who you would think care enough to join.

Graham's BBC article brought me and a good friend aboard. We've racked up 115 tasks in the last month.

But I've emailed a bunch of people giving them detailed info. But not one response! Some of these people work for WHO, or do humanitarian work for a living. It doesn't make sense.

My guess is that people just don't have the technical expertise to jump into this kind of project. Of course, it could just be apathy. I'm going to have to call a few and ask them.

More news coverage certainly couldn't hurt.

Do you have any more contacts, Graham?

My Feelings

smile Hi Julied
I have another story being published by a prominent Tech Site in the near future and my hope is that it brings in another 3000 + members

Without wishing to sound selfish, I dearly hope My Online Team benefits a little more from all my hard work, as it took 3 days to compile the information to motivate the BBC to publish the article

That story brought in in excess of 3000+ members to the World Community Grid and we got 40 of them which I must admit, I was very disapointed about considering Slashdot ran an article and got 3000+ Slashdot members to join the World Community Grid
They all joined Slashdot team and look where they are now!

I am obviously team motivated as well as World CommunityGrid motivated and you can probably understand that my reasons are two fold
#1 to bring in as many new members to the World Community Grid as possible
#2 To attract as many of these new members as possible to My Online Team
These are my reasons for bombarding news sites with info regarding the World Community Grid

It is of course a members choice which team he chooses to join, although my efforts are directed towards getting our fair share of the new members due to the fact that it was my efforts that brought them to the World Community Grid in the first place

I represent the WCG in a voluntary capacity as a Community Admin in an effort to help new members with their problems

#1 I have found and posted a good number of articles regarding Protein Folding to help to give the members here a better understanding of what they are acomplishing by contributing to this humanitarian effort

#2 I run the Riddle Thread, and the Joke Thread

#3 I found all the Animated Smileys for the members and posted them to the the Smileys Thread, to enable the members to dress up their messages and make them more fun

#4 I found and posted all the Animated National Flags to enable the members to better represent their Countries

#5 I make most of the Signature Banners for the team members, to allow them to represent which team they are on

#6 I make and post all the World Community Grid event Banners

#7 I root out articles that members may find benefiicial regarding viruses, and spyware, back up software and free internet telephony
software etc, etc

#8 I am constantly in contact with Dave Bell, another Community Admin and a member of My Online Team who also donates a great deal of his time to helping the new members
He also spends a lot of his time communicating with the WCG in an effort to get your suggestions implimented to improve the members experience here
Considering his medical condition he does an absolutely fantastic job

I hope this helps all the members here to understand my feelings towards wanting to get my fair share of members onto My Online Team considering how hard I and my team mates work towards achieving these goals

In any event I will be here to help to improve the WCG experience for all the members whatever team they choose to join.

yeah, but how many joined /. at first, but then defected to other teams? Probably not many, but I abandoned /. for Team Canada. Maybe an internal poll would reveal you got members on your team that first belonged to Slashdot? Likewise, maybe you got more than 40 from the BBC article but they joined another team first?

Either way, cheers to you and the rest of the regulars for your efforts, it makes things more fun for those of us who can "only" donate CPU power...

PS: getting IBM to speed up that linux release would let me (and many others, I'm sure) contribute more than just my one Windoze box....

Re: My Feelings

Again, don`t be fooled by the number of members in team /. About half of them never crunched and/or completed a single job since they joined.

I gotta give it to Graham for doing excellent community work on this board, and behind the scenes. However, the fact that he expects members to join his team rather than others gives me a bit of mixed feelings. As commun admin Graham is supposed to be neutral, so I understand that he hopes for more members but on the other hand new members do not owe him anything. Be glad they help the WCG! As for Team /. probably no one in their right mind will join it if they do not know about /. beforehand, except for the fact that perhaps because /. is #1, it`s more appealing. So for /. there is no real point in trying to win members from other teams. So in the long run, the country-teams will probably be able to outrun even /. but it will still take them quite some time :)

Re: My Feelings

Hi, Graham.

I had no idea the extent of your committment and labour in promoting this community. Thank you. Most of us joined because it provided the opportunity for the "everyday person" to be part of something really big and important.

Your post has provided me with another opportunity. Please check your team roster, you now have 2 new members: julied, billc & hopefully anyone else we can bring on board. I only wish we could bring the points we had already accumulated on our "own team" with us.

There are already enough stars in this particular galaxy. Shine on, my friend.

smile Hi a0a
I gotta give it to Graham for doing excellent community work on this board, and behind the scenes.
Thank you for the compliment

I think you may have taken my comments out of context
So Just to clear a few points up
The BBC article was about my team
I did not say I expected them to join my team
I said this:
Without wishing to sound selfish, I dearly hope My Online Team benefits a little more from all my hard work, as it took 3 days to compile the information to motivate the BBC to publish the article

but on the other hand new members do not owe him anything
Where did I say they did?
As commun admin Graham is supposed to be neutral,
Where does it say I have to be neutral
I am not an employee of WCG and I do this voluntarily and I do not get paid to help everyone here
I do it out of the goodness of my heart
Why should I not be entitled to at least the same rights and benefits as the rest of the members here
Which makes it doubly painful when people criticise me

I still bend over backward to make the interests of the WCG members a priority while helping my fellow team members to promote our team
I share 99% of the resources that I donate to my team with the rest of the members on all the other teams here [Does that count for anything]
As for Team /. probably no one in their right mind will join it if they do not know about /. beforehand
They were slashdot.org members already before they joined /. team
Irrespective of wether members produced for /. or not they were still attracted by the article about the /. team and initially joined /. as a consequence of the /. article [That was the point I was making]

If I work tirelessly to to get a News Site to publish an article about me and my team, am I being unfair to the other teams by hoping, I repeat hoping that some of them will join my team after I have been responsible for them joining
Everyone here has the same opportunity to promote their teams on the WCG, tech sites and media sites
So should I be criticised for taking the bull by the horns and doing something to help our team, in the process of bringing in new members who have read about our team in the media, in the hope that some of them will join us
Or am I being naive or unfair
