cool False Positive from Avast!

Here is the info (since I can't attach a screenie). Alll I see in inital post is a broken image link. I wrote all this down:

File Name: C:\Program Files\BOINC\slots\0\wcg_hpf2.random
Malware Name: Nutcracker family
Malware Type: Virus/Worm
VPS Version: 080807-0, 08/07/2008

Updated VPS does NOT trigger this alert, so I'm going with bad update for the false positive. BOINC people said I should post here since you run that particular project.

Hope this helps others!

Re: False Positive from Avast!

Hi savaka,

do you have HIPS/Heuristic detection on in Avast? I use same, but not run HPF2 for a while.... settings all at default normal. Will force a few folding jobs to make sure it is false positive, the definition update seems to suggest it being.

ciao

Guys, look at the filename again: wcg_hpf2.random

Random data like this will always trigger a heuristic scan purely by coincidence, once in a blue moon.

Play safe, delete the file and abort the work unit. But don't suppose it is a real virus.
