Problem Crunching

Hey all. So I just set up my work laptop to crunch WCG WUs.

I've noticed that on this machine, my Nutritious Rice WUs will run for about a minute, then will stop. It will still say "Running", but even an hour later it will have made no more progress, and wont have used any more compute time.

I have removed NR from my work computer's profile in the meantime, but was wondering if there is some sort of fix, or at least if this is a known problem.

I'm running BOINC 5.10.45, on a Dell Latitude D830, on both cores at 65% of available compute time (Intel Core2Duo).

edit:
Forgot to mention, this is a WinXP Professional SP3 machine.

So I've noticed that if I reboot BOINC, the WU will be in the state "Computational Error", however unless I take action (rebooting BOINC, or aborting the WU) it will stay in the state "running" but not use any compute time nor advance in progress until i do something about it.

edit2:

Re: Problem Crunching

I too have had the NR WU's stall but only on one of two machines that I run WCG on. I also have removed NR from running on one of the machines sad NR WU's run fine on the other. smile

Hello smcdougal & tekennelly,
Thanks for this information. Could you also tell us what security software you have running on the computers that can not run NRW successfully? After all, something is stopping them.

This is a new error for me so I thought I'd report it.

Re: Problem Crunching

Other than Symantec AV (which I have on my other machine -- a WinXP SP2 Pro desktop setup, which doesn't have a problem with NRW), I can't really tell what other "security" programs are running on this system, aside from normal WinXP SP3 security settings.

Re: Problem Crunching

I have Symantec AV on the machine that stalls on NR WU's. The other machine has AVG.

Re: Problem Crunching

The first error reported in this thread:

- exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005)

Has an FAQ to it's name in our Start Here forum. Probably the system destabilised and boot resolves, but do read it as there could be more going on.

RICE is finicky. I've had it once or twice, but now totally stable after removing some legacy gunk from old security software, left by them after uninstall.

Re: Problem Crunching

@Dataman

Your error

(Incorrect function. (0x1) - exit code 1 (0x1))

is discussed in a wiki:

http://www.boinc-wiki.info/Unrecoverable_erro...(0x1)_-_exit_code_1_(0x1))

It starts off by mentioning out of date device drivers en OpenGL, which is what BOINC science graphics use. Now got my NVidia on 175.19 driver pack. Have ample experience with Vista and drivers get quickly outdated with this OS. Had to several times renew my 802.11N wireless drivers with a fresh manufacturing version. SP1 called for another round of seeking out issues and I've still got one patch refusing to apply because something is not perceived as compatible, not found what, yet.
