How do you really get the MOST out of BOINC? I'm running BOINC on 4 Quad Quad-Core boxes (16 cores each box) and these boxes are dedicated to the WCG (they are not used for any other task)...
So my question... how do I get the MOST out of these boxes? Thanks, Ryan |

Hi,
----------------------------------------Unless you want to get into Tweaking / OCing the hardware, there is very little you can do. Am assuming each is able to address and have like 8gb RAM to allow even the biggest jobs (FAAH & DDDT) to run with 16 in parallel (See the Start Here forum Job matrix for the per-job requirements). Copious permissions need to be set, but if you already chose the Maximum Performance preset device profile, very little can be done on that front, maybe Set write to disk times to maximum to squeeze a few seconds. AND, install as a service if running windows and do not load the BOINCmgr GUI. That one does takes it's seconds/minutes too when expanded on screen. Oh, and check the AV/FW so that all the localhost RPC and disk IO can move unhindered. They're able to steal minutes with their permanent verification. Check your Services manager to see if there is anything superfluous that by default is on, but never needed. Other than that, the Sciences, not BOINC itself, take whatever spare cycle they can put their hands on. When I leave my Vista Quad alone it takes about a minute to see 99.95%-100.00% CPU efficiency in the control panel. cheers and over to the hardware gurus (if they are around)

And since neither you or Sekerob has mentioned it it is worth asking to make sure that your "use at most" parameter is set to 16 processors.

Someone who had a
---------------------------------------- moment decided to covert the # of total processors used into a % with BOINC 6. At least when plugging in 16 more cores to make up a box with 32, will they all be used automatically. This also is better suited to have different machines configurations use a proportionate number under the same device profile, thus a quad at 75% would use 3 cores and a dual clover would use 6 etc.

I actually am running Linux with 16 cores per server on 4 servers (total of 64 cores)... I'm doing pretty well: Accumulated Points: 7,065,088 Current Ranking: 674 I also am running this at home on my desktop (dual QX9775) and it's doing great... but since these servers are dedicated (unlike my desktop) I was hoping to push them just a little harder... I guess I cant really do that. 17:21:58 up 14:53, 1 user, load average: 16.00, 16.00, 16.00 Running at a 16 load isn't really the 'maximum' the box can do... but if that's what BOINC thinks is the most efficient... that's where I will leave it ;) Also... should I upgrade to BOINC 6? I think I am still running a 5x version. Thanks for the input.. Ryan |

Hello Ryan McAdams,
BOINC 6 still has some bugs. Wait until the WCG recommends the update. We still have not updated HPF2 to the BOINC 6 API. I do not have Linux, but some members say that Linux 64 runs noticeably faster when using the 32-bit support libraries to run 32-bit applications. This makes sense because all the support libraries can be compiled to run on modern CPUs (the only ones that support 64-bit) while Linux 32 has to be able to run on a 486. Lawrence |

If you get pored, you might want to change your processor.
----------------------------------------I did take a look of your statics, it shows that your average per calendar day is 9,426.66 points. I do have lesser amount processors than you have, but I still gain double of your points. I'm quite much right now having only seven _real_ server processor. Accumulated Points: 9,131,890 ![]() |

The average is an average calculated from the day you joined - it isn't a running average.
Some 3rd party stats sites will calculate a running average for you. Now, one (obvious) question not covered in this thread: have you set your device profile to "maximum output"? |

D., you are a stickler for the exact:
