I am using the old version 5.8.15 of BOINC for a new Vista laptop. I use the same version on a Vista Desktop and have no problems at all. After installing and verifying that all is well and the WCG tasks are running, I reboot the laptop and I get an error "Connection Failed (World Community Grid - BOINC Client is not able to connect to a World Community Grid Client)." I tried firewall exceptions on the laptop but that didn't make any difference. If I repair the installation, it works till the next reboot. Both the PC that is working and the Laptop that can't do BOINC are both on the same network with the same privileges. Please help me figure this out. The new version of BOINC is not able to run on Vista machines without repeated intervention at each startup and I know my daughter will not do something each time she reboots.

Hi Ed,
----------------------------------------I see you posting same on the Berkeley developers fora, so we'll handle it from there. It smells from here that BOINC.exe is not starting up. If you hit Ctrl-Shit-Esc simultaneous to open Task Manager and tick to box left bottom to show all processes, do you see a BOINC.exe process? You really should upgrade to 5.10.45 and install that as a service to C:\ProgramData\BOINC. That overcomes pretty much all plus this version was specially adapted for Vista. ciao [added: @knreed Assuming "Connection Failed (World Community Grid - BOINC Client is not able to connect to a World Community Grid Client" is the verbatim message it's clearly for the gobbledy cook department. Think it should Read that BOINCmgr, or for laughs the BOINC GUI, is not able to connect to the BOINC client or better, BOINC daemon]

Yes BOINCmgr .exe is running but no connection upon reboot. Should I uninstall the old and get the new and then tell me the steps to install it as a service so it will run at startup.

Ed Hello Ed, BOINC.exe without the mgr part! Is that running? There is a brand new FAQ and for emphasis whatever you read, install to C:\ProgramData\BOINC . It's THE place where Vista likes it and have it still in a protected area under user control. lawrencehardin posted the link in the Start Here forum.... give me a minute.

When everything is working fine BOINC.EXE is running and when BOINC is not working properly it is NOT running. If I end up doing the service route. Tell me exactly what to do so I can be done with it and have my daughter help me get past the 3 Mil point mark.

okay, so get the installer 5.10.45 and follow the FAQ i mentioned before.
----------------------------------------It's for 5.10.45 not much different whether to put it to C:\BOINC or D:\BOINC or whatever drive, but in no case to the default C:\Program Files\BOINC location that is being offered. Reference a future BOINC 6, the C:\ProgamData\BOINC I am recommending is the place where it will put the data only, splitting off the software to the standard location. The installer will remove the old software far as i remember. Let us know if the service install works even before logging in. The BOINCmgr than is optional and can be started manually as Windows Defender will continue to block it in auto-startup (blame bill).

I am not trying to be difficult but I don't have an administrator account. I am XP savvy but not Vista savvy. The FAQ seems to leave Vista out of it.
Ed I may be out for a bit soon so if I don't reply it may be a while or day or so.... Thanks for being so helpful! |

Now, not having admin rights makes me wonder.
----------------------------------------For Vista it's otherwise identical to XP, to quote a supplemental FAQ "If you do a clean install of BOINC, just choose a different directory than the default one which the installer is pointing at." This is where you have the option to enter the location we recommend it to go under Vista. Don't hasten through the install process. Read the screens and follow the screenshots in the FAQ. As for threshold fear, Vista shuffled allot of things to make it look new but there really is little.... same old, same old.

The FAQ seems to leave Vista out of it. From the FAQ: The default link used is C:\Program Files\BOINC\ !!!! When you use Vista, do know that this OS doesn't like it when programs write to disk in the \Program Files\ directory. Since BOINC writes to disk a lot, it is advised to change the install directory to something like C:\BOINC\ !!!! Later edit: I only posted this to show that there is reference to Vista in that FAQ. Not to thread on Rob's territory or changing his installation directory preference in any way. ![]()
