Who gets the results?

There are two important questions which interest me about this project and wcg projects in general:

*) Who gets the results? The pharmaceutical industry? An independent research group? After all, there are many pharmaceutical companies which are happy to develop medication and sell them at such a price that no one in the third world will profit from it. I would not be pleased if I find out that I actually just pushed Novartis' or Pfizer's income.

*) Will the results be published? And what are the results, anyway? It was only in wikipedia that I read that somewhere, 44 significant molecules were found in some project. I would be happy to know if the finished projects have actually been of any use.

thx for replies and have a nice day,
milvo

Re: Who gets the results?

The results are public domain. Any scientist, anywhere can use them. Everyone benefits.

Yes, the results will be published. It takes a couple of years after the completion of the the grid enabled part of a research project before the scientists can start publishing.

When new, this forum and the whole grid can be a difficult place to understand and navigate, patience and understanding.

Re: Who gets the results?

The Help section has a beautiful one liner on this.

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewSe...Community+Grid+part+of%22
Are the results produced by World Community Grid part of a commercial venture?
No. This is a philanthropic project, not for profit. The direct results of work done by the World Community Grid will be in the public domain.

Reality is, meds and inoculations don't come for free and if we find promising leads or compounds, someone has to develop them, synthesize them, test them, produce, package, ship, sell, stock and everyone in between will want to put something on top.... so in the end the pharma's will make money out of it, like it or not.

Re: Who gets the results?

If it is the pharmaceutical companies that end up selling products from this research, I don't trust them. In my view they have a bad record there are many natural therapies or at least more natural that have worked well for many illnesses but have caused to be rejected because of big pharma and mainstream medicine. I for one am a wittness to that. I had a terrible illness which is believed to be incurable by mainstream medicine. I read books and tailored different approaches to customise for my symptoms even though not a doctor or have any diploma or certificate. I have largely irradicated the illnes using vitamin therapy and diet. I still have it slightly the illness by the way was schizophrenia. I visited a mainstream doctor psychiatrist and he aknowledged that I had made great progress and rediagnosed me as schizo affective and I find now even that is beginning to subside. It was thirteen to twelve years after the illness started that I began to get on to this. In the meantime I received lots of different drugs which just left in a kind of stupor and only partially suppressed the symptoms. The drugs were making me mentally stupid and dim. All I wanted to do was sleep. No matter what different drug they tried me on it did not make much difference. I also had lots of ECT (electro convulsive therapy) which also made me forget nearly everything I had learned and I think have still not totally recovered from this, as my memory for names of objects and persons is terrible. I think I have been really affected by mercury as well. I have mercury amalgam fillings in nearly every tooth and this might be affecting my memory. Mainstream dentistry and medicine does not look for any thing like this very often, when making diagnoses. Whenever I go to the dentist now to get a tooth refilled I ask for a resin type filling (white) even though they are more expensive..
So this is just one example of where big pharma and mainstream mecicine don't give me much cause for optimism.

Re: Who gets the results?

That is an extremely interesting story.

I diagnosed my own problem as medically induced side effects. They wanted to give me more pills to fix the problems caused by the first pills. It was time to change doctors. Too many big pharma kickbacks with that one. Later, cutting back some meds and changing others fixed the original and secondary problems.

Getting back to the topic, this is the Dengue Fever section. We're doing what we can for a particular problem that we can attack with the grid.

The chat section should be used for general discussion, and there is also a caring and sharing section for sympathies that might also be applicable. Start a thread if there isn't a similar one already.
