Not enough memory

I am running Windows ME on a 2.4 ghz processor, and I have 1 meg of memory. Every time I try to open BOINC I get a message stating that I am out of memory, and i should close some programs and retry. The problem is that I do not have amy programs open other than my anti-virus and zonealarm. I am not able to run any projects at all. Can anyone advise me what i can do.

Thanks,
Ray

Re: Not enough memory

1 MB memory? That's not much, is it? That Windows Millennium wants to run in that is a miracle. wink

Anyway, I suppose you meant 1GB of memory and there is your problem. WinME, like Win95, Win98 and Win98SE have problems addressing memory over 512MB.

See this page in the Microsoft Knowledge Base for help on that.

Re: Not enough memory

You may have a lot of programs running in the background and these programs may be using a lot of system resources. After checking out the article pointed out to you by Ageless, you may want to try msconfig. From the menu on the Start button, choose run and when you get the dialog box, type in msconfig. After msconfig loads, look at the start up tab to see all the programs that are loaded upon booting up. I had Real Player, Quick Time, Office Search, etc and all of these use up resources. I finally had to use msconfig to remove from startup those programs I don't normally use. Some programs have config files that you can adjust to keep them from loading things on boot up.

You might also to run the resource meter program found in System Tools under Accessories. Right now, I'm running on my Win Me computer with about 9% User resources free and 31% GDI resources free. If I were to try to run another program in addition to WCG and IE6, I'd probably get the same error or drag my system down close to 2% resources free.

None of those items running in the background will show up on your systray or task bar. You have to do a little detective work to get to them.

I'm running WCG as I type this. I have 640 Meg phtsical ram memory, 640 Meg fixed swap file, with total virtual memory 2 GB with a 1.5 GHz Pentium 4. I started out on the old UD grid and came here when UD closed the project down. I switch from the old agent and have the latest BOINC running. It might take me 25 hours to do what the quad core folks do in 3 hours, but I'm making a contribution with what I have until I replace my system later this year.

With a little tweaking, your system should be running BOINC too.

Re: Not enough memory

Virtual Memory is recommended to be about 1.5 times the RAM size. Best is to set a low of factor 1.5 and allow the swap-file to grow larger beyond.

Do run a periodic PageDefrag (see Start Here forum Utilities FAQ). A homogeneous swap-file keeps the computer on best performance as will periodic soft boots using the Windows restart options.

Re: Not enough memory

Thank you everyone who offered suggestions and fixes for my problem. After reading the article supplied by Ageless, I removed 512 meg of memory, leaving 512 megs. This fix did the trick and I am happily crunching again!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Don't do that! Go get Windows XP or even Windows 2000 if you can shell out the 130 dollars for a new OS. I would HIGHY recommend it. Highly.
