Genetical Engineering - use of results

Dear all,
I've read all 69 posts on the subject but maybe I missed it - in that case, sorry. But regarding the question whether this is about genetically engineering crops I found only one answer - No. And that is ok. But in some countries, like the one I'm coming from (have a guess), public is very sensitive to the subject. So I want to dwell in a bit:

  • even if the project is about enabling (traditional) cross-breeding - can the results be used by others to enhance genetical engineering?
  • if so - straight or just 'coincedental' (i.e. any advances in knowledge always can be used for quite different purposes)?
  • can anyone commercially exploit the results (which I understand are available to public)?
  • or are there any 'fences' to commercial use just comparable to open source programming/GPL?

Sorry in case the latter is public knowledge - I'm on WCG only since a few months and sure enough got still a lot to learn.
Beside the concerns - it is a wonderful project at any rate. The 'cleaner' as per he above the more I can beat the drum...

Cheers
Peter

Re: Genetical Engineering - use of results

Hello Kusterer,
1. even if the project is about enabling (traditional) cross-breeding - can the results be used by others to enhance genetical engineering?

Yes, all biological knowledge can be used by genetic engineers.
2. if so - straight or just 'coincedental' (i.e. any advances in knowledge always can be used for quite different purposes)?

??? Both plant breeders and genetic engineers use biomarkers to determine whether a cross-breeding (or genetic implantation) worked the way desired.
3. can anyone commercially exploit the results (which I understand are available to public)?

Yes, public domain means anybody in the public may use it.
4. or are there any 'fences' to commercial use just comparable to open source programming/GPL?

No fences. Legal fences for knowledge consist of patents or trade secrets. GPL is a legal contract based on copyright law for a 'work', but public domain knowledge cannot be copyrighted.

Re: Genetical Engineering - use of results

Thanks for asking.

What we're doing right now is predicting the structure of proteins expressed in rice. Lots more work has to be done before these predictions can be used to improve rice, but it's a start. We have other tools to predict the protein function/behavior and interactions which utilize knowledge of the protein structure. Our collaborators are watching with anticipation, and there is a real goal of improving rice, but to be fair we are being completely open about the whole process.

The predictions made will be publicly available without restrictions. In fact, the methods and software to make these predictions are publicly available already.

To answer your questions:

1. Yes.
2. "advances in knowledge always can be used for quite different purposes" -- that's the nature of knowledge.
3. Yes, but the results are not directly commercially exploitable; predictions can guide further work. You are welcome to benefit from this in any way you see.
4. No restrictions.

Lawrence, Michal.
thanks a lot to both of you.
Clarfies a lot and answers all my questions.

{Sigh}
Being opposed to GM is like being opposed to killing. Even the Jains can't manage it. And it's REALLY hard to enjoy live barbecued chicken.

Re: Genetical Engineering - use of results

A question from a novice ... just started a few days ago.. although I did some processing for SETI a few years back...

Question is this: How much data, i.e., How many packets do we have to process to get this done?

How is data flowing in so far?

Dataman:

If you're still online... how many devices are you running and do you know if the new quad-core processors process four streams simultaneously?

And thanks for your last reply.

I've 13 but just 7 quads running now. Yep, quads do 4 at a time, duo's 2 and singles, alas just one.

Glad to have you here crunchin'.

Hi,

opposed to many a claim that it's difficult to find something, I find it not. (just getting to the particular post is a pain in long threads). Here's the answer

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/printpost?post=165608

To the sums:

40,000 genes broken up in 25 work-sets per gene, each work set broken out into 19 Tasks = 19,000,000 work units.

As of this moment WCG validated 525,817 with a launch date on May 12, doing about 31,000 average per day, but that I think will wane a bit after the hunt for the project badge is complete. Anyway 19,000,000 / 31,000 = 612 days from start.

The Project target is completion in 1 year, not necessarily written in stone. The tuning may allow for decrease or calling for increase depending if the 120,000 structure objective is achieved. And there is the famous knreed joystick.... The all-project / multi-project crunchers may see a little more share going towards RICE. The influx from the RICE press exposure and word of mouth continues.

crunch on.

[if there was a math error I'm sure to get to hear it biggrin

[added: thanks for asking, as it forced me to figure out away to put the % progress into the custom charts: 2.8% project completion to date +/-]
