Working on the FAA met two situations. First, after an interruption my work lost 3-4% (almost 2 hours for my computer). The second, at a time BOINC is testing my system which gave back 4%.
I thing to do the test at the beginning of the session or after a saving point and / or at the end of task. |

Hi,
----------------------------------------What version of BOINC are you on? How much memory(RAM) has your computer? The benchmarking, which it does once every 5 days, should not cause loss of progress with the BOINC 5.10.xx version, but you can stop it happening if it anyway does by going to the BOINCmgr Advance View and opening the Advanced menu > Preferences > Disk and memory usage tab and tick the 'Leave Application in Memory when Suspended', generally referred to as Leave in Memory or LIM. Since BOINC 5.8 and before do not have this local preferences screen, you can set the LIM on the website's My Grid > Device Manager > Device Profile > Default (or any other) > Memory Usage section - Leave applications in memory while preempted? Yes. Save. On next client contact the setting will transfer. As for loss of work progress, suggest to visit the Checkpoint Saving FAQ in the Start Here Forum to activate checkpoint message logging and determining best time to switch off the computer. On fast machines it's not important as you'd loose just a little but in your case it taking 2 hours for 3-4% progress it's best to understand the message log reading or the interpretation of the Best Energy Red/Green line graph sampled below.

Thank you. The first, I resolved. The new work is FAAH 6.05 which is 3-4 times faster (for new task 12-15 hours, compare with the 45 hours for 6.04).

Great, although I'm riddled why FAAH 6.05 should run 3-4x faster. It was only fixing a rare glitch. What kind of Computer (CPU make, speed and Operating System) is this?
----------------------------------------BOINC is separate from the Science. If you open the Agent and Click Help it should tell under the About option what version you have. See the Agent Version FAQ for instruction. Leaves for you to learn about the checkpoint understanding and how to use that information to choose the computer closing times. ttyl

Balanivan,
----------------------------------------This going back by a small percent and up again multiple times is totally correct and by design. Leave it run as it is trying to find the optimal docking position. That can take a while. After, it will race to the next checkpoint and loop a bit thru multiple attempts until it finds a better docking / lower Best Energy point. ciao

Thank you. The first, I resolved. The new work is FAAH 6.05 which is 3-4 times faster (for new task 12-15 hours, compare with the 45 hours for 6.04). I did not see any difference between 6.05 and 6.05, so your computer must be more sensitive to it. The old Win98 OS had problems like that slow timing. After awhile, the execution would just get slower and slower and the workunit would nearly crawl to a stop. Rebooting the computer every week or so helped that. [You still need to watch the checkpoint timing as in the above screen capture to best decide when to turn the computer off.]

I activated today checkpoint message. Thank you. Ivan Balan ![]() That is also a good idea, since some project checkpoints may not be easily figured out on the graphics screen.
