Re: Win XPSP 3...

It better works as Vista SP1 to XP SP2 has suddenly become a yawn network speed experience as well.... think the Italian pack will be offered in June earliest, whilst the inglese find all the late bugs :D

Re: Win XPSP 3...

I hear u, and have done some research. Their are going to be some interesting issues with this. Microsoft is, by proxy with this update, going to make folks change their internet habits. If you use your domain, and it is the Administrator domain, you might run into some roadblocks. One of the reccommended/ mandatory companions to it is Windows Steady State, the XP secure system add on. It is one pain in the rear to configure, but other folks besides me use my system, so it is very handy. The accepted wisdom from them is, if you are on the internet on your Administrator domain, you are insecure. Makes sense, but they wanna force feed everyone again. And, besides, XP is supposed to fall under the support axe this summer. crying laughing

Re: Win XPSP 3...

Don't upgrade to XP SP3 on a Hewlett-Packard AMD computer before reading this article in the Inquirer: XP SP3 crashes AMD machines http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2...-sp3-crashes-amd-machines

After reading it, I checked my Compaq Presario AMD computer. Sure enough, it has both Intel and AMD drivers on the disk, but it is running the incorrect intelppm.sys driver rather than the Amdk8.sys driver.

Added: 15 May 2008 HP is working on a fix. Don't upgrade to SP3
http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2...lls-amd-desktop-users-sit

Added: 11 June 2008 I got tired of waiting for the official fix. I used the unofficial utility mentioned in http://blogs.pcworld.com/staffblog/archives/006978.html then rebooted and then updated to Windows XP SP3. It all seemed to work fine.

Re: Win XPSP 3...

Mine is a few years old. AMD. Upgrading to Athlon. Any dysfunctional behavior is attributable to XP systems that are not dialed in. The processor issue is tied to the user hive characteristics of your XP vs. the type of system. Some OEM systems don't like Microsoft abridging the rules!!! I don't blame em... biggrin

Re: Win XPSP 3...

I've been running the beta on an HP lappy, with no real issues. "Upgraded" to the latest and greatest and so far so good.

Re: Win XPSP 3...

Well the italian pack of SP3 came much earlier and through AutoUpdate, quite a surprise some days ago and the wlan keeps performing poorly between XPs and the Vista host. On the upside after some additional configuration work v.v. new XP network security features, a number of things in Vista-XP exchanges fell in place. Suddenly it now sees devices by their names and workgroup functions started to hum. Need to understand why it is running slower instead of faster as was advertised in all the benchmark tests on the big tech sites.

Update: It's Whoa Nelly time, updating the Realtek and Nvidia drivers on the Vista box it's now suddenly comparitively on monstertrack, bidirectional.
