I'm running the 5.8.15 WCG boinc. I thought I'd try the new 5.10.45 version, but it requires libstdc++.so.6, which I don't have. So, what version of Linux -- specifically, Debian in my case -- is required?
The download pages and the help pages don't say what linux version is required. They should, because users downloading programs which they can't use is just a waste of everyone's time. |

There is a Debian and a Fedora wiki to install BOINC, but in essence Berkeley only tests for Ubuntu.
----------------------------------------http://wiki.debian.org/BOINC#head-b729364a6b5e64e82b8708b8e9e6c39e95afaff6 What version of the Linux distro goes with what BOINC version was discussed last week. There are hundreds it seems, so testing this is virtually impossible. No central list seems to exist anywhere.... not found it yet.

The most recent Debian Sarge backport on backports.org is 5.4.11. This is significantly older than the 5.8.15 that WCG used to have available. By jumping straight to a version compiled for a very recent Linux, WCG may exclude potential users, which surely isn't the idea.
The download page should include previously available versions, especially when they are no longer readily available anywhere else. It should also list what the requirements are, so that users don't waste their time downloading programs they can't use. The requirements list could be a list of which operating systems it's compiled to run on at a minimum (eg. Debian Sarge or Etch or ...) and/or a list of the required library versions. (eg. a page such as this one. |

Berkeley, the place where even the WCG installers are being provided from, lists 5.8.16 for older Linux versions
----------------------------------------and has at bottom some advise on the Linux distros fitting including Debian. Linux info: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php Each and every Berkeley version can still be fetched there: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/ The new official BOINC wiki would imho be the place to locate this matrix and that is very much a WIP: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/index.php/Main_Page.... feel free to add in, I do, hundreds do in a small way, in a big way. Honestly I don't see WCG engaging in this other than possibly adding some verbiage to point where more Linux/BOINC installer info can be obtained. I'll ask the admin to move this thread to Suggestions and Feedback.

The current release (5.10.45) is known to work with these Linux versions: * Fedora Core 7 and 8 * Debian 4.1 * Ubuntu 7.10 For other Linux versions, ... Yes, that's exactly the type of thing that would make sense on the download page, preferably with a link to http://boincdl.ssl.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_5.10.45_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh for the non-graphics version that's much smaller as well as working on older systems. |
