BOINC/WCG will not run at startup. I'm using the World Community Grid – BOINC Client v 5.10.45 and Vista Home Premium. The issue is that Vista is blocking these programs at startup. When the OS boots, I get a message that Windows has blocked programs. When I look at the blocked programs they are the BOINC client and World Community Grid. The odd thing is that these programs are in the list of programs that are supposed to be enabled to run at startup. There are several other programs in the startup list and all of them run OK without getting blocked. The check boxes enabling them to run are checked for the BOINC and WGC programs just as they are for the programs that do run. Any ideas on how I can get Vista to allow these programs to run? I can launch them manually and they then run OK.
BTW, I thought about posting this under the "Service not starting in Vista" thread but I don't think my issue is exactly the same problem. |

Hi Doreene,
----------------------------------------Yes it does and it will be [blocked under single or shared user install by Windows Defender] until BOINC 6 is up and running in production. There is though a workaround and that is to reinstall BOINC and choosing the Service option. It will start even before you log in. The BOINCmgr can then be run and closed any time you like whilst the sciences continue in the background. I've found another hack, but wont share it until I'm convinced the average user can handle it. Also visit some discussion we had last week with a user called 'Scribe'. He was explained how to get it running as service and afterwards start, but he likes to do things the insecure way (no passwords), so that's what he's doing now (unless he comes here to declare the change of mind on this). ttyl
