I spent the weekend up at the cabin at 6,700 feet. IT SNOWED and rained all weekend. Bad news was no work was done ... good news was many beers gave their lives!! If I had a broadband connection (or even a telephone ), I'd move the machines up there for the summer. Nice and cool.Crunch on ..... ![]() Hmmm, implication is that you have power there. If the plot of land is big enough, offer to let one of the cell cos. put a tower on it. You could hopefully make enough to cover a wireless broadband connection (along with the "equipment" needed for liquid cooling - you, not the machines) and let you run full bore year round. Perhaps more importantly, it would give you a good excuse for frequent trips to the cabin. You could end up getting accused of beer-ocide! ![]() Challenge Type: Results Returned *looks at DDDT* |

Does anyone know if RAM speed and timings affect crunching speed? Or is it just CPU dependent?

Power is by generator, water is spring fed tank (non-potable), cooking by propane, heat/hot water (hot shower ) by wood, sanitation by outhouse. It's in a valley so no chance of cell tower. There's not even any radio reception much less cell phone. It is a good place to get away from everything. Beware of bears!! So we are in a results race? Challenge Type: Results Returned *looks at DDDT* Don't look too long. Those WU's aren't so short anymore. They're roughly the same as HDC or FAAH. Rice is a bit longer and HPF2 is the long one. |

Does anyone know if RAM speed and timings affect crunching speed? Or is it just CPU dependent? Well, no one's responding and my opinion on this is like that of a burger flipper talking about theoretical physics. Still, I would suspect all else being equal, faster memory will make a difference. It may not be significant though. Not enough memory hurts because you end up paging out memory to disk and disk IO is the tar pit of computer performance. It seems that normally the CPU is the fastest part of a computer so multi-threading and multi-tasking let it deal with the slower parts of its computer home. Some of the projects use a good bit of memory so faster memory says to me that it can exchange that data with the CPU faster which means that there is less chance of the CPU being idle for a few milliseconds and milliseconds add up. I still have to wonder just how significant a difference it ends up being unless you're going from extremely slow memory to high speed memory. |
