Hello all. I recently migrated several boxes to BOINC from the old client. I have a couple minor issues that I couldn't seem to find an answer to in the FAQs. Maybe someone can help.
One on WindowsXP workstation, I noticed there are not one, but two 'faah' tabs in the window. Is this normal? I don't notice this on two other XP machines. Also, I have BOINC on a Mac running OS X. There are two strange things. First, the progress percentage has reversed itself a few times. It went up to about 3% and then dropped back to 1.5%, for example. This has happened three of four times at various stages. The second odd thing is, I see the other (Windows) boxes under my device manager, but not the Mac box. Is this normal? Thanks for your help. |

Are they multicore machines? BOINC can run a workunit in each core. UD could only do one per computer. One of my machines is an X2. I changed to the simple view and yes, it shows two tabs because there are two workunits running. An X4 would show 4 tabs.
----------------------------------------As for the percentages backing out, did you turn off the machine? Perhaps it restarted at a checkpoint. There are a couple of different views in BOINC, simple and advanced. One might have too little and one too much, but look around. If any devices were registered a long time ago, they probably rolled off of the display. Change the two picklists to all devices ever registered and all devices that ever returned a workunit and all should show up.

Maybe it is processing more than one unit. As for the percentages backing out, did you turn off the machine? Perhaps it restarted at a checkpoint. Nope, haven't turned it off since I installed. Many thanks for your help. |

Hello ZABA77,
The Advanced view will give you a better idea what is going on. For example, you might have a Pentium 4, in which case if your preferences are set to run multiple threads, then you will run 2 threads (hyperthreading). The progress bar can move backwards a small amount if an 'attempt' fails and the computer trashes all the work done on that 'attempt'. Lawrence |

Hmmm...I registered the Mac yesterday, but not there. Strange. If it has not returned one result yet that could explain it.Regarding your single-core running two tasks it is probably a Pentium HT which would be slightly more efficient running one task only. At least it would use less memory for producing about the same amount of work. From the Advanced View select Advanced->Preferences and under the "processor usage" tab force 1 in the "use at most x processors" option. Cheers. Jean. |

Thanks all. The Windows machine is a P4, so that clears up that.
Thanks for the info on the Mac box too. It's an old machine, so maybe it's not up to the task. Thanks again. |
