Free Internet Phonecalls Everyone - More Skype News

Making phone calls over the net

Telephone calls made over an internet connection are predicted to be the next revolution in telecommunications. Cheaper broadband costs and user friendly software is helping users to start making Voice over IP (VoIP) calls, with a number of companies offering products.
The BBC News website's business editor Tim Weber is a Skype user, while acting technology editor Darren Waters has been getting to grips with Vonage.

We've got a new word in our family dictionary, "to skype", as in: "we can skype this evening", or "I'll skype you now".
The ugly word stands for a little piece of software called Skype, which allows computer users to make calls over the internet using "peer-to-peer" technology.

The beauty of it: the software is free, the sound quality of calls is outstanding, and if the other party has Skype as well, calls to the other end of the world won't cost a penny.
I use Skype mainly to call my parents, who don't live in the UK. Every three months I used to get a painful reminder of the distance between us, when British Telecom sent me my quarterly phone bill.
But half a year ago we downloaded and installed Skype at my computer and that of my parents, and our phone bills have been slashed.

How does it work?
To use Skype, you need a computer (Mac or PC), an internet connection (ideally broadband), and a microphone headset hooked up to your computer - although the external speakers and microphone that come with most modern computers will do fine.
Skype looks a bit like an instant messaging programme, like Windows Messenger.
You have a list of contacts - either other Skype users, or a phone number.
Read a selection of your views on internet phone calls

To call someone, you select (or add) the name or phone number and click on a green button.
After a few seconds you hear the phone "ring" ... the other person answers and you have a normal chat "on the phone".
Conference calls are easy to set up, and instant messaging is possible, too.
What's good?
The sound quality is at least as good as a normal phone call if you use the speakers/microphone combination, and excellent if you use a headset.
A "call" to a Skype contact is free, regardless of duration and where the other person is based.
When I "skype out" - call a normal landline telephone - in Western Europe, the United States, Australia and a few other destinations, I pay about 1.7 euro cents per minute - much less than what I would pay BT.
Call charges to other countries are higher, but still cheaper than most other deals.
So what are the drawbacks?
Well, for starters you need a computer to make it work - and sit in front of it.

If you've switched off your computer or are off-line, nobody can skype you and you may not be able to hear a call coming in, if you are away from your PC.

There is one remedy, but it is not cheap: Siemens is selling an antenna that plugs into your computer's USB port, and connects a cordless home phone to Skype. And other companies are bringing out phones which plug straight into a USB port.

Twice over the past six months Skype failed me because of "network problems", although they usually went away after a few minutes.
All in all Skype is brilliant, very user-friendly, very cheap... but you won't be able to do away with your old home phone yet.

Re: Skype Version 1.1

Skype 1.1

List Price Free

So you aren't ready to give up your trusted phone line, but you still want to make free calls over the Internet? You might give Skype a try. This peer-to-peer application from the makers of Kazaa lets you talk to other Skype users using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). And for those friends and family you can't convince to download and install Skype, you can still call them from your PC by dropping some euros onto a prepaid SkypeOut account. For free calls among Internet-savvy friends, Skype is a no-brainer: calls are clear, and there are neither ads nor a charge. But before you throw money into a SkypeOut account, keep reading.

Skype is now in version 1.1 for Windows users and 1.0 for Mac, Linux and Pocket PCs. The software is as easy to use as any instant messenger. All you need is a USB headset (or a microphone and speakers) to make and receive calls. For free calling, you'll need to get your friends or family to download Skype, but the software is so easy to set up and use that you shouldn't have a hard time selling them on the service. Unlike FreeWorld Dialup, Skype is an integrated solution that combines service and software, resulting in unparalleled ease of use.

After a quick download, you'll soon discover that Skype 1.1 looks more like an IM client than a softphone. You sign up with a username rather than a phone number. Instead of dialling a number, you can just click a username from your contact list to initiate a call. There's even an IM option, should you prefer typing to talking, and a conference-call function that lets you converse with up to four other people at once. A separate download, Skype for Pocket PC, gives a Pocket PC-based, Wi-Fi-enabled handheld the ability to act as an instant messenger and make calls from any hot spot.

Call quality was very good in our trials: long-distance conversations were crystal clear, and there was only the slightest evidence of latency -- not nearly enough to interrupt the flow of the conversation. Impressive, too, is the fact that we had no trouble getting through our corporate firewall for calls to Skype users outside our corporate network. Considering that the software is free, we were surprised to find that it's also ad-free.

We experienced mixed results with SkypeOut, which we used to call non-Skype users. We added 10 euros to a SkypeOut account in order to call regular landline phones. You make SkypeOut calls from the regular Skype window on your PC -- just hit the plus sign, then the number. The welcome screen displays a running tally of your remaining SkypeOut balance. With SkypeOut, you can call any number in the United States, Canada, most countries in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Chile for 1.7 euros per minute. Calls to other countries and to mobile phones carry slightly higher but still very reasonable rates.

Call quality was on a par with what you'd expect from a mobile phone -- some calls were clearer than others. During testing, however, a number of calls were dropped after the first few seconds. We wouldn't recommend using SkypeOut to replace your current long-distance carrier. Instead, use it as an inexpensive alternative for the occasional international phone call. With no activation fee, SkypeOut is cheaper than other VoIP phone services such as Vonage for periodic overseas calls -- as long as you're comfortable talking through a microphone or a headset attached to your

Re: Free Internet Phonecalls Everyone

Hi Graham,
I agree the quality on Skype is good, although I've only tested it.
Do you have any idea of what bandwidth during usage and idle state, I have a capped account at the moment,( waiting for word of the speed upgrade 4-8meg sometime around April)and it could be something to consider.
For UK landline users, look at http://www.call18866.co.uk/index2.php for free calls at anytime thro'out UK.

That sounds good for now, but I have used "free" internet calls in the last 5 years or so that are no longer free. I wonder how long this will last. I think one of them was called dialpad or something like that. Also, can't you use available instant messanger services to talk pc to pc? I was under the impression both yahoo and aim had that capability. confused

Re: Free Internet Phonecalls Everyone

I now have the unofficial communications mechanism of "My Online Team" (Skype) running as well. I am very impressed with the sound quality across the internet. I also have tried "SkypeOut" to call regular telephones in the US and Europe as well. Regular landline calls are not very expensive (0.017 Euros per minute), but a call to a friend's cellular phone in Germany was a bit expensive at 0.251 Euros per minute. I found out that you can use e-Bay's PayPal to prepay for SkypeOut time. It was rather nice to be able to put voices to a few of the other members of "My Online Team" -- I talked with Graham, Frans6nl and BillyBob on Skype today. I will be getting an RJ11/USB adapter soon which will allow me to connect my regular cordless phone to the system and the regular phone network. Then I will be able to Skype from anywhere in the apartment instead of having to sit here in front of the PC for the calls.

Free Internet Phonecalls Everyone

I have found that Skype has a forum facility at http://forum.skype.com/index.php. While browsing the forums, I found out that there is an echo test facility within Skype. To quote their technical staff member's posting about it:

"A special test service has been built, that is will answer your call, record 10 seconds of your voice and play it back to you.

Use this to test your Skype set-up and connection.

How to use the service:
* simply call user echo123 to use the voice echo service
* you can also add her to your friendslist - she will accept all authorization requests
* you can also send her messages - she will echo back your messages

Please be aware that you will hear your own voice echoed back also during the beginning when you are making the recording - this is due to the nature of the service, not a bug in Skype or your configuration. We are investigating the possibilities of removing this echo.

Currently the service is able to handle only one simultaneous call, meaning that you will get a busy tone if someone else is already using the service. In such case, try again after a minute."

I also found a Skype add-on while browsing the forums called "Pamela" which is a voice messaging system that will record messages from Skype callers when you are away or not available. It can be downloaded for free at http://www.pamela-systems.de/.
