Hi! I am a journalism student at USC and I am working on a story about grid computing. I am looking for someone who would be willing to answer a few questions about why they participate in the grid. I appreciate any help you can offer. You can reach me on tis forum or at riese@usc.edu . Thank you!

our ultimate goal is a program that will change all your grades to A's and automatically nominate you for the nobel prize in literature. however, there will be a small fee for the service.
just kidding ![]() 1. we don't have to know about biology, chemistry etc. while we contribute 2. the machine does the work; we don't 3. the work is potentially world-changing 4. no cash involved except leaving the machine on 5. some nice people who want to make things better good luck on your story. |

Just a small corrective amplification. The BOINC grid program has a power saving option to allow the automatic pausing after the user ends the computer use (keyboard/mouse), so it can go into standby mode by itself. An 1-2 hours a day is enough to do 1 result in a week or so, with deadlines starting at 10 days, but some projects even having 14 or 20 days to finish 1.

For me, volunteering my computers gives me that feeling that I am doing something productive and doing something to help the world. It gives me that good feeling inside, kind of like when I donate to the local firefighters association or the state troopers (the "CHiPs" in your case).
katriese831, may I ask if you have ever participated in grid computing, and if so, what are your opinions? I didn't see USC as a partner for WCG, maybe your story could find its way to your deans office and persuade them to request info on becoming a partner? Good luck with your story. Please let us know how it turns out. |

OP you might start at your own school....go to the corner of Washington & Grand and you will find the sixth largest grid in the world....I was there in the move and setup... The following link is a slide slow of the move and setup of the Grid at the University of Southern California, I am in in the hooded sweatshirt in slide 36.
http://www.usc.edu/hpcc/news/ then click on the slide show link towards the top of the page. The shows goes thru the gutting of a old clothing factory to creating a multimillion dollar crunching center. This project was finished towards the end of January 2007. |
