I tried to shut down the BOINC Manager on my Mac and everything slowed down. The sound got jerky and I could just forget watching a video. Even the mouse movements was jerky.
I opened the activity monitor and observed the cpu usage as I turned the BOINC Manager on and of while I played music in the background. Same thing happened with the music, but the cpu usage fell down to normal levels. When I started BOINC again, the music started playing like it should do and my two CPU's ran at near 100%. Can anyone help me with this problem? I'm at a loss Bingoboy |

I had a CD playing in the background on a WinXP computer with BOINC running. I exited BOINC and restarted it. There was no change to the sound of the music at all. Sorry, I can't reproduce the problem. This computer has 3 Gb of memory, which is more than sufficient.
----------------------------------------Do you have a memory limitation? I don't know how much a Mac needs to do its thing. What else is running? Yes, I imagine that videos and games could be fairly intensive. Those might be an exception to the rule. BOINC should be exited or snoozed in that case.

Shouldn't be doing this at all. What kind of mac, what OS version, and how much memory installed? My guess not enough memory and its using virtual memory but not sure. Let us know.

I'm experiencing this when BOINC Manager is NOT running. I even experience this when I have tried to deinstall BOINC Manager and restart the machine.
System specs: MacBook Pro 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM Mac OS X ver. 10.5.2 Bingoboy |

How long have you been running BOINC 5.10.45 and how long have you been using 10.5.2 (Leopard)?
----------------------------------------BOINCmgr and BOINC core client constantly communicate over RPC, thus wonder if the one or the other BOINC related element is trying to seek contact. Did find on the big search engine entries of this on OSX 10.5 and comment that it did/does not happen on 10.4: http://www.versiontracker.com/php/feedback/article.php?story=20071105215650218 Experiment: Instead of shutting down BOINCmgr, go to the Activity menu and select the "Suspend" option and see how things go playing music.

I have used BOINC since the end of March and I have used Mac OS X ver. 10.5.2 since it's release.
I tried to use the "Suspend" function, but the same thing happened. Is the BOINC core client a part of the BOINC Manager or do I have to delete it seperately? I would like to test a totaly BOINC free machine without having to reinstall the OS. Bingoboy |

BOINC core client is what really runs the sciences and does all the housekeeping. BOINCmgr is just a convenient GUI interface to communicate the commands and provide feedback to the user.
----------------------------------------I'm not entirely sure what you want to achieve, but you could uninstall it again: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/ReleaseNotes Think 10.5.2 has only been out for 6 weeks or so and saw that Apple issued a super patch of like 87 parts.

Take a lookat your logs through console to see if any messages indicate boinc having problems. One thing I do after upload/download is to suspend network activity so it won't keep trying to call. I had problems at first with boinc and leopard but since upgrading to 5.10.45, seemed to get rid of most problems. Another thing to look at is activity log, check out active processes. Pause boinc (don't shut down) and see if you have a stuck WU. I get these from time to time but usually in tiger. What version are you using?

Thanks for all the suggestions, BUT nothing solved my problem. I even tried to remove all the BOINC files and restart the mac in safe mode. The result was the same: slow computer without BOINC, fast computer without BOINC??????
This is frustrating. I have to use my mac in meetings all the time, and the fan is going ballistic, making al lot of noice. My next step seems to be a total systen reinstall. Any last thougts before I rid my mac of evil things the brutal way? Bingoboy |
