Why can't WCG host their own 'banner' system

I have noticed for a long time that the banner I had been using in the WCG forums and on my personal website to help promote the World Community Grid, is no longer functional. It was generated by a website other than the WCG, and looked like this sample --

I know that the WCG has bigger fish to fry, but then you come up with things like "Project Badges" and "Partners", presumably to encourage participation, so why not also do something like a banner program to likewise encourage participation.

Thanks.

The widget is good idea, but you can't put it as signature in forums..

Too bad we don't have Boerni's stars any more, but at least Mousie's stats are single liners.

Re: Why can't WCG host their own 'banner' system

I still think that WCG ought to host some sort of banner-statistics program for the benefit of teams and members who want to use them. Seems that that would be the least it could do in exchange for all the crunching. Is there some valid reason why they can't or won't, or have they never considered it? Where do I need to post or send an email to take this to the next level? The widgets which were suggested are not the same thing and do not replace banners, although I do thank Didactylos for his suggestion.

And I might add that I don't just donate the spare power on my computer; I have been a very active recruiter for WCG using my own website and domain names for that purpose -- see Velek.com, for example, and also 2plus2is4.com, although the latter primarily promotes grid-computing in general but uses the World Community Grid, including a link to it, as the only actual project example. In addition, I have repeatedly orchestrated several recruitment campaigns within the brewing community for my 'Homebrewers' team, which is still in the Top-100 teams at WCG (I've relinquished the position of 'Captain', but I was the founder and am still the oldest member of our group). I'm not looking for a pat on the back, but I'd like to think that I deserve about one minute of attention from someone with actual authority at the WCG on this question/request for a WCG-hosted banner program.

Thanks.

Re: Why can't WCG host their own 'banner' system

Not sure if there needs to be a 'valid' reason. There are so many different sig generators around written by crunchers that it strikes me as an amount of duplication. I use the Mousie version in it's simplest form, rotating and showing the WCG and BOINC credits for this project.

Some use the horrendous BOINC Synergy version and attach to 40 projects and boast about it in their sig. Even before you get to read a post you have to page down instead of scroll. If you want to see what i mean visit posts by some on the Berkeley BOINC developers forum. Wish for sure that the next WCG upgrade has a height limiter and an avatar/sig suppressor option.

Just my 2 Euro cents ( = 3 of the USD version ;)

... handing over to an official opinion :D

Re: Why can't WCG host their own 'banner' system

Bill, stats signatures are only really meaningful in DC circles - beyond that, they are just cryptic and annoying. So, since there are already perfectly good stats banners available, WCG don't feel any pressing need to duplicate that work.

For sites outside the DC world, just extract the logo image from the widget and use that.

This is why a stats banner has never even made it onto the todo list (although non-stats banners were on the wish list for a long time until the widget was created). Still, we're happy to discuss this further if you want.

They do have a SIG option for WCG only. Just require this version instead of the megabox:
