The agent seems to use more bandwidth on my PC. I have about 40kb max upload speed on my ISP connection. When running this agent, I measure an average upstream speed of about 10kb being used. I have two PCs. Running two agents simultaneously means half (20/40kb) my upstream bandwidth is constantly occupied via 2 active agents running on 2 different PCs. That means speed of your net connection is significantly slower.
What do others think of this? |

There is a local connection between BOINC and the BOINC manager on the computer that uses a few cycles. It does NOT have anything to do with the internet. The only time bandwidth is being used is for downloading workunits or uploading results.

Hello milic,
When you start using BOINC, you must download new project software (once) every time you start a new project. This also happened when you started with UD. Once you have all your new project software, your downloads will be about the same as with UD. So it is just a startup cost. Repeated whenever a new version of project software is deployed. Hi, One agent constantly uses 10kb upstream bandwidth, 24/7 non-stop. This isn't just temporary, like when the system is uploading results and downloading a new project.

I thought that is what you meant by "constantly" but it does not make any sense. If the computer is only apparently running BOINC, does the task list show anything else getting a portion? Unless I am entering a message here, my network activity is zero.
----------------------------------------Go to the BOINC icon and snooze it long enough to compare to see if it makes a difference. We suspect that the activity is coming from elsewhere. Any local activity from BOINC and BOINC Manager could be confused with internet activity.

I seem to have a similar problem. Zone alarm indicates that the boinc client is always active. This occurs when I select snooze, and also when the log indicates activity has been suspended. The only way to stop the activity indicated by zone alarm is to exit the application. I have a cable connection that is always "on" so the commands to disconnect are not applicable. Also, the option to allow network activity during certain hours has no effect (even though the log indicates that network activity is suspended). Any suggestions?

Hello William Johnston,
----------------------------------------Yes, you are seeing a Zone Alarm 'feature' (bug). The BOINC client and BOINC Manager are communicating with each other once a second. This is called the 'heartbeat'. These inter-process messages never leave your computer, but Zone Alarm considers all messages from processes to be Internet messages and blinks the icon to alert you. Supposedly they have corrected this in some recent version (Vista 64, I think) but have not corrected it for older Windows XP systems. It is explained in Start Here at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=16624#131531 Lawrence [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 12, 2008 4:31:57 AM] |

Thanks Lawrence for the quick response and information. It is very much appreciated, and explains the mystery....I guess I should have done a more complete search before posting!
