I run UD on my CAD machine at work, a seriously fast computer, fastest in the office less than 3 months old.
Well our IT policy is, no installing of software. I don't have the user rights to install BOINC. ![]() So i Run UD, i have just unzipped it in a user directory and launch the exe every time i use the computer. ![]() I will no longer be participating without UD. Shame. Maybe other users have the same problem. |

Well our IT policy is, no installing of software. UD is software. BOINC is software. Without permission, you shouldn't be using either one, so there's no shame on this end. We assume that you would be allowed run it at home on your own/spouse's computer. ![]()

...So i Run UD, i have just unzipped it in a user directory and launch the exe every time i use the computer. ![]() .... FYI, you can also do this with BOINC, although it is not so straightforward. Just copy the entire BOINC directory across and then delete any files and directories specific to any projects that you run. I dont have a file list - but it is not too difficult to work out - just look at the filenames and the contents of XML files. Copying in this way works because a BOINC installation is very low key - it makes no registry changes and does not deposit any files outside its own directory (at least the last time I looked). When you run your new copy of BOINC you will have to attach to your account and projects. If you can, get your company and its IT department on your side, at least on some, even unofficial level. The problem these days is that large companies have such complicated and restrictive IT policies which are so difficult to change, and although you may get a positive response to the idea from your boss and the IT people, BOINC still probably breaks the rules! But then generally company PC users DO break the rules, and usually for more selfish reasons than BOINC. We probably all check our bank balances, pay the odd bill, check that bid on ebay, using a company machine. Some listen to music or play games, probably pirated. Company PC users get into trouble when this usage becomes blatantly unreasonable, wastes company time, breaks the law, or brings the company into disrepute. BOINC does none of these. I run BOINC continually on my own machine. If I had the need of my own laptop, it would run BOINC. I have run UD/BOINC on a succession of Company laptops with unofficial blessing. I do have admin rights and so I could install BOINC, but that would leave an official record of an installation event, so I copy it as explained. When working, I sometimes connect to the company's intranet by starting a VPN connection. I have to remember to disable BOINC communications when I do this because the company firewall blocks BOINC secure communications. SOMETIMES I FORGET this part! No doubt this generates an alert somewhere, and someone has noticed, but so far (2yrs with this company) no thunderbolts have struck. Case law has established that Companies have the right to snoop. It is their equipment, so they are entitled to know exactly what you do with it - including email. Most company machines have "software auditing" services running, or remote administration, which are supposedly for auto updating and licence verification. So, if you run BOINC without asking, BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU! I believe though that there is a healthy job market in CAD ...and in electronic engineering ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
