It would be great to have an installable queue server like SETI for the users who are not always online. A user whenever he connects to the internet can upload results and download new work units thru this server.

Currently we really don't need intermediate queue servers since we have built a server farm which can support millions of users. When we get into even higher numbers, we will consider this option as well as others, but we expect that to not be required for years.

Aren't some cpu cycles wasted in the process of connecting to a server on the internet and up-/downloading new work, instead of a dedicated server on your own lan?
I don't need it for myself, but I can imagine if you have lots of clients, you will have a higher efficiency if a dedicated server on your lan handles the internet traffic, while other clients are calculating. Lan speeds are usually faster than internet connections. Also, it might be possible that you'd like to schedule the WCG traffic in the time nobody is at work if you have permission to use it in your company. |

A user whenever he connects to the internet can upload results and download new work units thru this server. I've already run into situations where my computer has finished one unit, but cannot start on another because it isn't connected to the internet at the time. The ability to download two or three work units at a time would allow the computer to keep working until the next time I am online. This will probably be mostly an issue for laptops and those with dial-up connections, but it is worth considering. I'd estimate that between this issue, only utilizing one CPU, and time out at night to prevent over-heating my laptop is doing maybe 1/4th of what it could be accomplishing (though that's still more than my work computer does running 24/7). |

I know that in the old RC5-64 Bovine client for Distributed.net, you could choose how many work units to queue up. I used to queue up 100s at a time (though they only took about 10 minutes per WU). Seems like it would be a simple thing to implement that would be very handy. |

you might not need a queue server however we might.
----------------------------------------I have access to over 500 clients of 2.4 GHz p4 or better that have been using a queue server for SETI@home. It is not practical to give all of theses systems internet access. Theses clients are for network trafic genereation on a closed LAN. I would LOVE to have these machines doing somthing usefull for humanity other than searching for aliens!!! [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 18, 2004 8:54:32 PM] |

I agree with CBDunkerson, while a queue server isn't neccessary for most people it would be very helpful to allow the user to download multiple WU and then always maintain a buffer of WU's just like distributed.net did.
I've had several machines for one reason or another that have failed to recieve new WU and have been sitting idle for far too long! Can't have that now - I figure i have only a short chance at displacing ol' Viktor's for the #1 spot since someone like Smily is bound to come along with 500 machines soon! ![]() shadowman |

I'm not sure I understand your request. You only have to be online during the period the application completes a unit of work and transmits the results. Then it will automatically retreive the next work unit. The rest tof the time, you just need to have the device turned on and do not need a connection. If you are offline when a work unit completes, it will upload/download the next time you establish a connection. Thanks! <dataman>

Thanks! <dataman> Well in my case I travel quite frequently on work for anywhere between 2 days to a week. While I'm gone my systems are running but are not online. In such a case a queue server installed locally on any one of my computers helps a lot. This is what I do with my Seti queue server which always has enough work units to last my 3 computers for twleve days each. ![]() |
