My points will lag severely over the next few days since I'm ripping a bunch of DVDs and my girlfriend is coming to visit. Prolly won't hear from me until Monday. So? You get any this weekend, Jonathan? ... Points that is ... ![]() ![]() Either way, there appears there is hope for the boy. Clearly he has to realize that BOINC runs on Macs and we obviously don't see his girlfriend here, so there is hope for him. ![]() Oh fun was had and reindeer games were played. As for her Mac, it's pretty useless. In her own words "I bought it because it fits in my purse and matches these cute shoes!" Sometimes, really, I wonder if there is any rationality in the female gender. Anyone who considers the Mac OS stupid frickin floating task bar cute was never meant to use a computer or operate heavy machinery. And that's my chauvinism quota for the day. ![]() Blizzie, it's just a two hour outage. With what you have in the PV jail, you'll never notice it .....unless you're referring to the stats?*point to college* ![]() ? ![]() Don't have any good choices. UCSC (I heard bad things about druggies) Cal Poly Pomona (Maybe...) San Jose CSU (No) East Bay CSU (No) Bad year for us.. 20% increase in applications.. Highest in the nation. And my major is impacted all UCs.. I wouldn't worry too much about the druggies. It's not like people who smoke pot are going to break into your dorm room and spill bong water on your computer. They're just going to eat cheetos and sit on the couch all day. Besides, they pretty much stick to themselves anyway for safety reasons. *heavy duty briefcase lock thingymajigie with fire protection and water proof sealing for my laptop I haven't bought yet* |

They're only criminals because the US government has arbitrarily decided to make marijuana illegal. They aren't criminals who are going to steal from you or rob you or anything. Take it from me, my friends and I smoked, dropped acid, shroomed and we never hurt anyone else. If you're really concerned, consider rental insurance for your dorm room. It's pretty cheap. My friend's cost him $26 a year and it covered him up to $15000. |

Go where you'll get the best education. Crime is an issue on any college campus these days, and one they like to keep quiet too. You have to protect yourself no matter who you choose. Cable locks for you laptop are a given but even then, lock it up inside a cabinet or drawer that's locked too when you leave it in your room. Even with off-campus housing, if you're in a complex that got a noticable student population, it will get targeted just as badly as any dorm. You have to always keep an eye on things as a lot is oportunistic. It's like being in an airport, all you have to do is turn around and take your eye off things for just a few seconds. Jonathan's insurance idea is a great point and worth the cost. You may want to work thru the insurance co. your folks have their home with, especially if they deal with an agent and not some call center. If you do lose your laptop, you're likely to get better turnaround on getting the money to replace it working with the agent that knows the family already. You could use one of your crunchers at home as a backup source too. You'd at least have the option of net connectivity to it to keep up with your work while you're getting the laptop replaced. Even if you don't lose the laptop, having a plan for dealing with that can be handy if it's out of service for a few days too. Stuff never breaks when it's convenient. UCSC has the advantage of being close enough too that you could come home for the weekends. While you may not want to, having that option can be handy. I've heard about Route 17 and how it can get closed by slides but if UCSC is your best school, take it. Jonathan's probably right about not having to worry about the druggies. You'll be watching out for the just plain theives wherever you go. |

Keith is right on the money with this suggestion. In addition to better service, you'll also get a much cheaper price. I do all my insurance through one company and they give me a loyalty discount. |

Another thought is to check with the campus police dept. and ask to see their campus crime statistics. If you go with a dorm room, some dorms are safer that others. Know that ahead of time and factor that into your housing request.

Know that ahead of time and factor that into your housing request. Then again, if you live in a turbo-safe dorm, that probably means there are more people ready to narc on you for every infraction of college law you could possibly commit. My suggestion: don't worry about criminality that much. Buy your insurance and forget about. Inshallah - it is allah's will. |

My suggestion: don't worry about criminality that much. Buy your insurance and forget about. Inshallah - it is allah's will. It's not about avoiding the "homeowners association psycho president". It's about not learning things the hard way. If one dorm has a history of problems with a set of doors not locking properly, you'll likely hear about that while you're on campus. What's not nice is to learn it the hard way as a resident there. If you go with on-campus housing (some places require that of freshmen), you normally give a list of your preferences. If you can factor this sort of info into your choices, you don't have to risk learning it the hard way. Some dorms just may not be well lit at night. Others may be fine but located on the edge of campus next to a main highway that provides fast access. It's simply part of making an informed decision, just another factor to consider along with the age of the dorm, location, amenities and such. |
