The last ACH work unit I got was ach1_ 24_ 68_ 4-- on 3rd March. This seems to be part of cycle 24. As ACH has only a total of 27 cycles in this phase, does this mean ACH is nearing the completion of the phase? Just 3 more cycles to go!

Correct, and well observed. This first phase is nearly over. There will be more news on the subject next month, I expect.

I haven't got my ACH badge yet. . Just will need a couple of work units more, i guess. These days I don't see any ACH WUs being sent to me either, even though my machines 'mimic' the required bandwidth

There certainly seem to be some interesting out-of-sequence jobs. One of my machines picked up a ach1_14_71 WU today. Whole group sent out with 2-day deadline. (not surprising, since that data set has some catching up to do)

Besides the two ones that I posted here I got anothe one today ach1_23_71
What does exactly mean first phase is nearly over. There will be more news on the subject next month, I expect Are we supposed to be to stop crunching AC@H and if so when ..thanks |

Means 23rd 2 week (14 day) cycle of 27 total covering the year 2003, block 71 of 82. A block is 30x30km. So we're trying to emulate a climate prediction against 73,000 square km, about 2x the size of the Netherlands. If these predictions match the actual measured information, one can say if micro climate prediction is viable and how much more it needs refinement to be able to expand it to a larger area of Africa in the second phase.

Jean Pierre wrote on Mar 8, 2008 12:20:22PM Besides the two ones that I posted here I got anothe one today ach1_23_71 This becomes more interesting in combination with knreed's post in other thread: As you know we are currently running through 52 weeks of simulations through 82 different parameter variations. You can tell which week and parameter variation if you look at the workunit name. For example, workunit 'ach1_ 13_ 49' is the 49th parameter variation for week 13. The workunit for ach1_14_49 depends upon the data received from workunit ach1_13_49. We send the data back to the researchers once a given week has finished completely. For various reasons some of the parameter variations fall behind in terms of which week of the simulation they are on. This delays us in sending the data back to the researchers. As a result, we are automatically marking new workunits for the parameter variations that have fallen behind and high priority. So, Kremmen and Jean Pierre got two WUs that are using the same parameter variation (#71) but are 9 evolution steps apart. And this on the same day!!! Maybe one them had a typo. Or is there another explanation for that? Greetings Thorsten |

Or, it was found that somewhere in the block 71 cycle 14 something went wrong and given that 15 depends on the result of 14 and 16 on 15 etc, that block could need re-computation from week 29 all the way up to bring it back in sync.
----------------------------------------just a stab.

haha, i must be clairvoyant, or now too much for my own good (which is actually true from many an experience 'in the office') .... a project update speaks of rerunning bits changing some parms.... they had not at 112 days progress (thru cycle 8):
----------------------------------------http://www.csag.uct.ac.za/worldcommunitygrid Dear WCG members, AfricanClimate@Home has been running successfully for six months on world community grid since the Technical Launch last year. We at University of Cape Town would like to thank everyone who has been a part of this project. Initial results have already been received by the UCT team of scientists. In the ongoing first phase, 82 one-year simulations are being performed and 30% of the output (112 out of 378 days) is already available for analysis. The primary concern at this stage is to guarantee that the results received are coherent. Sometimes, when working with climate models, we face some inconsistencies in the output that may require us to change a few parameters in the model and rerun it. Fortunately, the data received so far do not show any of these problems. Figure 1 shows a kind of output plot we use in visual analysis of the data. In this example, we see the precipitation simulated for the 14 initial days of the run. The amount of precipitation and its spatial distribution over the domain show good correlation with observed values. We also make use of specialized statistical methods in analyzing received data. Thanks to bbover3 for pointing out this project update.
