Running BOINC or UD on a "Locked" Computer

How can we run BOINC or UD on a computer that won't let you install software unless you have administrative priviledges? I'm talking about a Dept of Defense computer on a network. What the security personnel is concerned with is automatic connection to the internet without anyone being on the computer.

I've done this before when my friend who is the IT dept head unlocked my computer and set the time for connecting to the web Mon-Fri, 0900-1500 only.

Thanks, k cool

Re: Running BOINC or UD on a "Locked" Computer

Who wants to go there and meddle with a DoD computer?

BOINC can be configured to connect at the times that the IT person thinks save different times for each day of the week. It also can be set to only work when the computer is in use, again at different times each day of the week.... so if not there, it can be told to stop any amount of minutes after the last move of mouse and keyboard entry.

Single user installation does not require an admin level permission and will only start loading and crunching when signed in, but do get the permission at all times. It's the DoD's computer.

cheers

Re: Running BOINC or UD on a "Locked" Computer

Usually the DoD locks stuff down for a reason. If this machine is on a network with internet access I would assume the classified machine is not on the same network. Or one would hope wink
You should catch your supervisors interest in WCG and see if they have any way to pitch an idea to become a partner . Not sure if DoD is a partner or not already.
PS make sure that internet machine is at least 36 inches away from the classified machine! The data might "jump" from one machine to another laughing. Still waiting to see if I can catch some data trying to fly through 3 feet of space to make it across. Maybe I'll set up a camera over the weekend to see if the stealthy little bits wait till I'm not around thinking

Re: Running BOINC or UD on a "Locked" Computer

The DoD funded one of the WCG projects - the very first pilot project that ran before WCG even launched. So, they might be open to it, if you contact the right person.

I will just repeat the key point: you need permission, either express or implied, before you can run World Community Grid on a computer that doesn't belong to you.
