Re: Team Andrax, The Great International Team!

How do team, greets from the UK, spring has sprung here yesterday, and true to form it snowed :), hope you're all well, I've finally stopped kicking things and shouting at retailers. I had to pop back up to the same retailer to pick up a few bits for a machine I'm building for a colleague and the guys there were having a laugh with me about the note that's been added to my customer profile on their system.

Be warned, this could very well be the angriest person alive.

There have been several Ryzen developments Cap'n, I'll email you through the site

Paul,

Your comments made me decide not to even attempt this new AMD CPU. I believe I will stay with Intel unless a material change of events should occur.

Keep us posted with any other news regarding Ryzen that you should hear about.

Thanks!

Re: Team Andrax, The Great International Team!

Hi Ray, my Ryzen adventure has been less than ideal but I'm kind of happy that it's now at acceptable levels - with a couple of caveats.

Heat was the main issue, when I first put it all together, the second I ran Boinc to 100% usage, the temps shot way up and the system shutdown because of temps and just general instability.

After a motherboard change (after much angry shouting) it was slightly better, what I've ended up with now is a case with neither side panels on it, a corsair H60 AIO water cooler, 2 fans sat on top of my graphics card pointing at the capacitors right next to the CPU, they were getting skin removingly hot, now it just burns and a fan as close to the backplate as I can get it pulling warmth away from the backplate which is why both side panels are off.

The backplate fan made the biggest difference, around 10 Celciius worth and ever since it's been rock solid stable and I've even managed a small overclock to 3.9Ghz while everything has stayed stable. The temps now read at around 69 to 73 Celcius but AMD are claiming that the CPU is reporting 20 Celcius higher than it actually is and that that over report was intended, if that's true then the CPU is running reasonably cool considering it's core/thread count, the motherboard runs betwwen 30 and 40 Celcius.

Performance wise, it's a tough one to compare to other machine I run, I have a couple of 6 core i7 3930K's that tend to prodiuce more in a day but they're running Linux and are completely dedicated to crunching, the Ryzen hovers anything from 10-15K behind to at best I think was 12K more, now considering that the Ryzen is weighed down with Windows 10 and does a lot of other stuff - gaming, network monitoring, regular backups, browsing etc. then I'm happy with it's output.

I am very tempted to try running with Linux as an exclusinve cruncher for a few days but with the amount of messing/rebuilding/swearing/breaking things/angry driving to retailers I've done the last few weeks a much bigger part of me is saying leave it be.

So..... Ryzen works for crunching well, it's a stable if messy and shoddy looking setup, there are early adopting issues with some motherboards, this i think was most of my problems but over time I'm sure these issues will get ironed out - at that point they will make very good financial sense due to the low cost versus an Intel 8 core chip and they're not lagging massively behind in performance either.

Re: Team Andrax, The Great International Team!

Has anyone had an unusual points boost lately? with all the chopping and changing of machines and bits, daily points has settled to around the early 500,000's. Yesterday points rocketed to 763k for seemingly no reason at all and the first half of today is just over 400,000.

Anyone else seen similar? I have no explanation at all

Re: Team Andrax, The Great International Team!

Hi Paul,
I'm completely on SCC and had low credit yesterday. I think it is caused by lomger running wu. Now I've received comparebly short wu with higher credit.
This is not unusual for vina projects like scc, oet a.s.o.
