Total cache ("cache") levels play a role to to the extent of your crunching strategy. For this discussion purposes "cache" levels is defined as minimum work buffer plus max additional work buffer. Specifically, from my observation WCG cache level does play a role if:

1) If you want to "load up" on a certain project or type of project task being distributed for whatever the reason; or

2) If the task has a "wingman". Over time and generally speaking, the larger your cache level with a "wingman", the quicker your results will become "valid". The shorter your "cache", the longer it should take for tasks to become "valid". If no wingman, then cache level are not important for this situation; or

3) WCG will be going offline for maintenance purposes and you want to have sufficient tasks to crunch while WCG is offline; or

4) You want to have a sufficient cache level in case the WCG should unexpectedly go offline. Based upon historical events and prior discussions in other threads, a 1-1.25 day cache level should be sufficient for this purpose; or

5) If you do not want "repair" tasks sent to your computer, then you would want a cache level greater than 4.1 days. WCG sents those tasks out to computers where they are deemed to be "highly reliable" and return results in less than 4.0 days. If you do not mind "repair" tasks, then set you cache for some number less than 3.9 days and make sure the tasks are returned in under 4.0 days.

Minimum cache levels requested and what is downloaded, from my experiences and observations, tend to error on the side of more tasks being downloaded or tasks taking a greater amount of time than the total cache level requested, not less.
