Re: .

Hi Heartbreakers,

We are pleased!

Now, about your question, I must say that I don't fully understand what you are asking. "I guess what we need to ask is how high can we set the server to the other drives without harming our output." What do you mean by "how high"? Are you asking what percent of the CPU to allow BOINC to use on the server? How much disk space the other computers should be allowed to use on the server? How far above the floor to set the server? (kidding)

I set the CPU percentage to 100% and let it use all it can find. Since it is set automatically to low priority it backs off when other processes ask for power and I don't notice a thing. Most projects generally don't use a huge amount of hard disk space but I like to give it room in case a new project wants space to write things down.

If you clarify what you mean I (we) should be able to give better answers for you. I am not the most knowledgeable person here when it comes to networks but I do know who to ask. We will help you sort it out.

What oVo posted.

Heartbreakers, you can tell I was tired last night. Clean that laptop as keithhenry suggested and then buy a Zalman cpu fan for it. You will not regret this. I am a big Zalman fan (pun intended).

This is the one to take a look at:

Zalman NC1000-S Quiet Laptop Notebook Cooler Silver Description

With computing power ever on the increase, heat issues can affect laptop computers just as much as conventional desktop machines. Because such high-power components are squeezed inside such a small case, it is inevitable that the heat has to escape somewhere, and invariably manufacturers resort to small, high speed fans to keep their components cool.

Features

Increases cooling of both PC and Apple laptops
Reduces noise because internal laptop fans run slower
Improves reliability of the laptop because it runs cooler
Offers better ergonomic positioning of the laptop thereby reducing fatigue
Powered by USB, so no need for extra wires from a separate power adaptor.

Even then, safe cooling is not always assured - especially if the machine is used on soft surfaces such as carpets, duvets or trouser-legs! Anyone who has ever used a laptop, literally “on their lap”, will know just how hot these computers can get. Even the big boys can get their designs wrong. Apple and Dell recently recalled nearly six million laptop batteries because of potential overheating and fire risk, at an estimated cost of over £100 million!

As the world-respected leaders in desktop cooling solutions, Zalman have launched their first product aimed specifically at laptop users - the ZM-NC1000 ultra-quiet notebook cooler. We think every laptop user should have one! It gives peace of mind that your laptop will not overheat and crash (or worse). It improves long-term reliability because the laptop is running cooler. In most cases, it cuts down on the noise from your laptop fans, because they don’t need to run as fast to maintain a safe temperature. Last but not least, it raises the rear of your laptop, making it much easier to type on its keyboard without worrying about wrist-strain.

The ZM-NC1000 comes with two centrifugal fans which give excellent airflow to the base of your laptop, with minimum noise. The speed of the fans can be adjusted according to how hot your machine is running and how quietly you would like the fans to run. The product comes in stylish black or silver finishes, and will accommodate the vast majority of laptops on the market.

Because the fans are powered by USB, there are no extra power supplies or wires to worry about, other than one cable (included) which connects the NC1000 to a USB port on your PC or Macintosh. You don’t lose a USB port because the ZM-NC1000 has one to replace the one being used on the machine (see picture). And at just over one kilogram, the Zalman notebook cooler can easily be transported with your notebook so you can use it anywhere - not just in your office!

----------------------

And yes, use your laptop to run the Help Conquer Cancer work-units. Small memory foot print. Very good for laptops and even older PC's.

littlemiss, those news are incredible. Results going to the Medical Journal? That is fantastic! I hope all goes better as she goes to rehab! good luck

Hi Yall,
Gee I have this warm fuzzy feeling oh... thats the cat lol Seriously, thanks for the great welcome. The laptop is plugging along with 8 results tho I need to take it offline for a few days. Found out hubby's pc was off when I thought it was running, but the server was the one I wondered about, and I think ovo answered my question about how much processer should be set, if I understood him I can set the amount of processer to 100% and just have it pause when we need a picture music or other stuff on it. I will double check all the pcs tonight for settings and tweak accordingly.
If yall never see us again it is because the machines rose against us and are holding us prisoner to supply them with all the menial labor they need<VBG>

I think that Boincstats (Bam Boincstats, the one that just about everyone uses at the WCG) refreshes at 8pm Eastern ... not exactly sure for right now. I guess we will all find soon.

How often is BOINCstats updated?

BOINCstats checks for XML updates every two hours, and, when available, downloads them, reads the content into the database and updates the credits and ranks.
The numbers from this update are used to display current credits and ranks for the stats only.
The incremental updates take between 15 minutes up to one hour to complete.

At 15:00GMT each day all new info from the XML files is imported into the BOINCstats database. New users/teams/countries are inserted at this point, and daily/weekly/monthly numbers are calculated. When there is no new XML file for more then a day, the stats will show zero credits for those days.
The numbers from this update are used to display the numbers on the frontpage and the detailed stats pages.
The daily update takes about 2,5 hours to complete.

The same update, but then just for hosts, runs each day at 1:00GMT, and takes about five hours to complete.

Only users, teams, hosts and countries with at least one (1) total credit are listed!

When an update is running, there is no check for new XML files until the update is finished. This is why the time since last update can be more than one hour.

Until this date, BOINCstats never failed to run it's daily update , which means: when new credit is granted and the XML output by the project is OK, you'll get your credit on BOINCstats within 25 hours.

BOINC will scale back on its own, you don't need to manually pause it to do other tasks. It is meant to accept your scraps and not steal the dinner from your plate. Do be aware of temps however, if your machine runs hot or the room temp is high you may consider turning it down a bit. Generally this isn't an issue, but it does crop up once in a while.

I got another update on my friend, Mary. She's still in ICU but progressing really well, talking, writing a little, and even walking. The doctors are amazed at her progress. She'll be transferred to another hospital in a couple of weeks, where she'll have intensive physical therapy. The surgery caused some loss of movement in her arms, but she's expected to recover it completely. One thing I didn't know is, this is the first time this surgery's been done in the world! Mary's case is going into a medical journal.

This whole experience brings home to me the importance of research. Twenty years ago Mary would have been given a death sentence, as there was no treatment at all for this. The more the scientists and doctors find out about how these diseases work, the easier it will be for them to find treatments and cures. Keep on crunching!

GREAT, GREAT!!

Very good to hear and thanks for the update!

Let's all set the crunch to ON!

Well, a new look for the Free-DC Stats using only Boinc stats:
http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=team&...m=5567&sort=yesterday

Very nice looking! I used the yesterday stats, naturally. You will notice "todays stats" giving you an idea how the day is going as far as 'resuilts' go. The BBQ list is on there! New terms and numbers to understand. Cool "Team Mate" info for you. You stats and ranking and so forth. Nicely done!

To get used to Boinc numbers for now, just multiply by 7 to see what it would have been using the old UD point system.

Terms like: Cobblestones, Total credit. Recent average credit (RAC) is explained at the wikiboinc here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BOINC_Credit_System

Very easy to understand. Great job of explaining everything. It may take awhile to get used to the same numbers.
