Hi ovo,
We aim to please most of the time ;-) We probably need to ask how the best setup for our network is, we have 4 pcs on one network, one is mostly the server for external hard drives, the two newer ones that are mine and hubbies, and one laptop, that is the 1/2 puter cuz the fan drives me insane. I guess what we need to ask is how high can we set the server to the other drives without harming our output (one is photos home movies etc the other is our huge pile of music and monthly a total back up of our personal pcs. The laptop has plenty of ram but it is a few years old and like i said sits next to me and the fan makes me want to toss it into the pool <G> So our fellow crunch heads let us know if you have any good suggestions (other than tossing the laptop into the pool lol) and we have enough knowledge between us we just may make a bigger gain for efficiency And thanks for the welcome! |

FYI....given my experience with my laptops, if you haven't done this in the past year, open it up where you remove the keyboard and clean out the dust. That helps it run cooler and quieter. Also, most laptops seem to get their incoming air from underneath so make sure it's not sitting on a non-firm surface. Looks like they're using plastic for the fan blades these days so if the machine runs hot often enough, the plastic can warp evan a little and cause a lot of noise that way - all you can do for that is replace the fan.

Hola, Heartbreakers! Fortunately, we have The Lazy Slug on our small, yet very dedicated team. He is well known for writing a "White Paper" concerning: Easy deployment and maintenance of BOINC. He is a guru. There is a thread at our Team Web site. We also have Killer Tomato, who has done what you are trying to do. He will have many answers. Just post at our open Distributed Computing forum at: Team Andrax Distributed Computing Forum Stop here to see daily Team Member stats at our Team Andrax Distributed Computing Forum and look into the World Community Grid thread. It's a long one. Just "hit" the last post icon. Killer Tomato *will* have your answers. He is very adept at that. Have a great Friday! Hi Heartbreakers,
We are pleased! Now, about your question, I must say that I don't fully understand what you are asking. "I guess what we need to ask is how high can we set the server to the other drives without harming our output." What do you mean by "how high"? Are you asking what percent of the CPU to allow BOINC to use on the server? How much disk space the other computers should be allowed to use on the server? How far above the floor to set the server? (kidding) I set the CPU percentage to 100% and let it use all it can find. Since it is set automatically to low priority it backs off when other processes ask for power and I don't notice a thing. Most projects generally don't use a huge amount of hard disk space but I like to give it room in case a new project wants space to write things down. If you clarify what you mean I (we) should be able to give better answers for you. I am not the most knowledgeable person here when it comes to networks but I do know who to ask. We will help you sort it out. |

I got another update on my friend, Mary. She's still in ICU but progressing really well, talking, writing a little, and even walking. The doctors are amazed at her progress. She'll be transferred to another hospital in a couple of weeks, where she'll have intensive physical therapy. The surgery caused some loss of movement in her arms, but she's expected to recover it completely. One thing I didn't know is, this is the first time this surgery's been done in the world! Mary's case is going into a medical journal.
This whole experience brings home to me the importance of research. Twenty years ago Mary would have been given a death sentence, as there was no treatment at all for this. The more the scientists and doctors find out about how these diseases work, the easier it will be for them to find treatments and cures. Keep on crunching! Welcome, Heartbreakers! How nice to get 2 new members at once. littlemiss |
