For some reason, the WCG Daily Stats were noticeably lower at last evening's update, yet it did not affect our Team that much. There are now 24,601 Teams at the WCG. Our Team was 52nd in Points Generated and 57th in Results Returned at last evening's update.

Speaking of research, news of at least two peojects are in the news and getting great press. Still waiting (just like all/most of you) to hear about research for the cancer, muscular dystrophy and other projects. <i>Two Compounds Discovered that Pave the Way for New Class of AIDS Drug IBM World Community Grid’s Computing Strength Powers Breakthrough Research that will Guide their Development La Jolla, Calif. - 02 Mar 2010: A team of researchers at the renowned Scripps Research Institute has discovered two new compounds that prove the existence of new binding sites on HIV protease. Associate Professor C. David Stout, senior author of the study, explained “These results open the door to a whole new approach to drug design against HIV protease,” which is an enzyme used by HIV to create new, infectious viral particles. According to the World Health Organization, about 33 million people currently live with HIV infections. Several drugs used to treat AIDS inhibit this HIV protease target, but drug-resistant mutants that impede the effectiveness of these drugs keep appearing and getting worse. </i> From IBM Press Room lhhung Nutritious Rice for the World Scientist The end of the Nutritious Rice for the World Project All good things must come to an end and this is the case with the Nutritious Rice for the World project as the final results came in earlier this week. We are analyzing the results and this will take some time. All of the scientists involved in this project are volunteers as well and we will be analyzing the data to identify proteins and genes that may be useful in breeding better rice strains. We are also applying for funding to further develop some of the technologies such as gpu acceleration of the process and sophisticated techniques that recognise structure and sequence patterns or signatures to identify the function of the protein. There are some tentative plans to perhaps apply the software to other plant genomes. It will be *very interesting* if and when IBM is able to convert those older UD Points into Boinc credit. Our great 'lil Team will also be greatly affected in stats, Team rank and so forth. That will be something to see!
