Does WCG boinc run on an IBM system p?

Hello, all,

I'm curious: does anyone know if Boinc can run on IBM's Power series of workstations/servers which run SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 for IBM POWER?

Thanks,

Mark
ps: for those who recall my trials and tribulations getting Boinc client to run properly on my Linux system, Boinc continues to run and run and run, just like the Ever-Ready battery bunny.

If there is an 'intel' inside wink

BOINC can run on pretty much any platform properly compiled. It's the sciences that are most often only re-written for a Intel code type CPU. Except for AC@H and HPF2 all sciences of WCG also run on Mac Power PC computers (think that's the current standings).

Re: Does WCG boinc run on an IBM system p?

So, is the answer that Boinc will run only on an Intel processor (ignoring the older Mac power processor, which I am not sure is the same as the chip used in the IBM machines - See the IBM site: http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/ca/en/intellistation)?

Does the x86 include the current Xenon core duo chip?

Thanks,

Mark

The WCG sciences which just makes use of the BOINC client to get fetched and returned can run on Windows 32/64, MAC Intel/PPC and Linux 32/64. The System Requirements page outlines each science and on what platform they are available. Your link is dead but it seems these IBM intellistations are windows capable.

So Xeon x86 chips fit the bill however many CPU's and cores you manage to squeeze in a single device.

Re: Does WCG boinc run on an IBM system p?

Sekerob,

Thanks for the reply. I remain confused. You mention a combination of operating systems (Windows & Linux) and hardware (MAC/Intel/PPC). Does this mean Boinc/WCG will work on IBMs Power 6 workstations running Linux? Have a look at IBM's web site:

http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/p/hardware/entry/p550/index.html

This link should work.

I don't want to buy an Intellistation (x86 - Xenon) as IBM are selling off that final Intel line to Lenovo. IBM have better service. So, I will seek to buy the Power 6 with Suse Linux, but only if it runs Boinc/WCG work, hence the need for advice. As WCG appears to be linked to IBM I would hope for a definitive answer on this forum (I may be a bit naive).

Hope you can help. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Mark

Re: Does WCG boinc run on an IBM system p?

Hello Mark Heseltine,
All of our applications are compiled to run on the x86 except for a few older ones that also run on the shrinking Mac PPC base (FAAH, DDDT and HPF2). I do not expect (could be wrong) new projects to be boarded for the old Mac PPC standard. But FAAH and HPF2 are likely to run for years, so it is not likely to be a problem for their owners.

Re: Does WCG boinc run on an IBM system p?

Thanks for the reply, Lawrence; your comments make the point clear - the x86 is the standard. I've also checked out the prices of the IBM system p, and I think it as back to the drawing-board - by that I mean I will be building my own system with an x86 chip. ;)

Thanks again for the informative reply.
