Re: Stormy Weather!

Actually that stat can be deceiving, as the environment can be changing around you as well.

We still have weather advisories up. crying

LOL, ice storms?
It's been below zero most of the week, want to trade?
it looks like I have found most of my systems and got them back online.
Whoever planned the move of the servers didn't think it through very well.

I would have traded this last week for pretty much anything.
I had to pull a dual core xeon off the grid. I also found that my slow AMD was having issues when I attempted to bring it back online yesterday so it got scrapped. So I went out and got myself a new system. Quad Core 2.33 GHz with 6 GB of RAM, 500 MB Hard Drive, 1 GB Video Card, and a Dual Layer DVD Burner.

Built the system last night only to find out it uses USB keyboard and mouse which I had the mouse but no keyboard. Back to compusa tonight for a new set.

I did bring the system to the office today and installed Vista Ultimate 64 and got it crunching so it is crunching workunits as I type.

May I be the first to drool. drooling

Looks like the weather is lifting. biggrin

I was wondering what you think of this:
Cora's Low Power Recipe

Take: Shuttle SG33G5 Socket 775 Barebone - Intel G3...TA, 250 Watt Power Supply

Add: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Processor HH80562PH05...EM, Socket 775, Processor

Blend: Western Digital Cavair GreenPower 500GB Hard Drive - 7200, 16MB, SATA-300, OEM

Fold: Corsair Dual Channel TWINX 2048MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz E.P.P. Memory

Stir in OS and optical drives to taste.

The base cost is under 500usd shipped and it has a 30usd rebate on the ram. So a Linux system with a cheap dvd drive would still come in under 500usd complete. If this is the case, then the total power savings at 5usd/mo would pay for the unit in under 4 yrs. But in relationship to the q6600 here, it would lean towards a 7usd. I just cant vouch for the build, as i dont have one.

Now a video to honor my team, as we have been hit badly by the data center move. As right now our courage is what is mostly holding us together.

Not enough cooling for my taste especially for crunching. Even mentioned in the reviews about heat. Also you would need a fan for the processor since the OEM chips come bare.

A small case like that collects heat instead of dispersing it.
If you have 2 huge case fans, maybe, but it would have to have fans that sounded like a jet taking off to keep it cool enough.

I'm sorry, my post is lost. What I was pointing to though is there machines out there that can ride down this road? I don’t like the form of the unit because it looks like you would be stuck with no motherboard options. There is no power supply option either. I fact it is amazing it works at all, but it really is to point out a low buy-in, low TCO direction for crunching. One of the machines here will be due for replacement in a year, so I must plan now.

The part that isnt seen is there is no need for a cpu fan. The case has an integrated cooler that combines the case fan and heatpipes to route the heat straight out before it heats the case. But it stresses almost every other spec as well. And with using a usb optical drive and a green hdd, could help it slim down on power as well as heat.

What I am basically looking for is a new weapon that crunches well, but something that will also help on the other front. The war against my power bill.

Ahhh, I have seen CPUs without fans, but you still have to have a heatsink. I don't believe there is one with an OEM CPU, and you rarely see one for sale without a fan.
If you have a heatsink that would fit, you might get away with it since the case is designed as you describe.
