confused Why use BOINC ?

When I talk about Boinc & WCG, I try to explain the advantages of grid computing to help the Medical Research, and I talk about the projects : AIDS, Cancer, Decrypthon, etc.

Almost 99% of the time, the only answer I get is : "it's useless. Tell me of a real result of Boinc". I can't answer to this. The fact is that almost all persons don't think that a personal computer - even a great number of computer - can have a real impact on medical research.

I mean ... I know we help to speed up the Research, but the fact is I can't tell anyone that the WCG members helped to cure one particular disease - even a "little" one. I know it's "better" to speed up for the Cancer, which is a very important disease, than to find a cure for a "little" one, but I also think that most persons want to see a real result ...

Maybe I'm wrong, but do we have a list or something like a list with the REAL results of the past years of WCG computing ? It would be really helpful to show that to other persons and convince them to install Boinc on their computers...

Im' sorry for my poor English, I hope it's understandable ^^ I can try in French too ^^

Re: Why use BOINC ?

There are many results from grid computing, but most of them tend to be a little dull and technical. It's hard to get excited about something that's hard to understand.

But one of the projects recently completed by World Community Grid is already delivering practical results that real people can relate to. It is the Help Defeat Cancer project, and you can read about it in Scientific American http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=cancer-software-technology as well as many other news sources. World Community Grid is delivering real results, and this is the result that will be helping actual patients the soonest.

Is that the kind of thing you wanted?

Re: Why use BOINC ?

Thank you Didactylos.

My English is far from being perfect, In understood that the HDC project helped to create a database to ease the detection of cancer from biopsies, is that right ?

It is typically the "real results" that other persons want to know ...

Re: Why use BOINC ?

No, it's more than that. The tool they have created does two things. It can identify sub-types of cancer better and more efficiently than any other method, and it can match the exact cancer type with the best possible treatment for the patient.

They call it a "decision support tool". In the future, cancer patients will have the best possible combination of treatments from the many current cancer treatments available. This gives the best possible chance of remission.

This doesn't mean we aren't looking for better treatments, too! World Community Grid's other cancer project is doing basic research in that area right now.

Re: Why use BOINC ?

WCG is not building any monument, it is "only" delivering the stones that builders need.

The problem for people is that, as usual, the construction site is not easily accessible to everyone. smile

Cheers and good luck. Jean.

PS: Your English is much better than the French I can read on several French DC forums. smile

Re: Why use BOINC ?

Didactylos, thank you very much. As you can see, it's difficult to understand every result even if I'm happy to crunch and if I understand the need to participate.

I will now know what to answer when somebody ask me about the results of grid computing...

JmBoullier > merci ;-)
