Using Video Card GPU

Is there some sort of application out there that will let me use my Nvidia GeForce 7950 GX2 to crunch data? If not, it would be great the next time I update there is an option to make use of it.

Re: Using Video Card GPU

Sorry there is not. This question comes up about once a week here regarding GPUs and PS3s.

Folding@home (another distributed computing project), which does make use of GPUs and PS3s, only has support for some specific models of ATI cards; the application does currently work with nVidia drivers.

Re: Using Video Card GPU

Well they ought to be working on more grid computing projects to take advantage of GPU's. A massivly parrallel (and powerful) specialized processor just sitting there idle is a crime. I am glad Folding@home rolled out support for some ATI cards, but they need to work on more cards, like nVidia and such. I mean, look at the computations they have gotton done with those ATI GPU's!

Re: Using Video Card GPU

And Folding@Home was using Ati X1600 & X1800 GPU's with around 60 Gflops, witch are old already. The new GPU's from Nvidia and ATI claim almost a Teraflop of power. Imagine 50000 of WCG users, 2 years from now, using these GPU's!!! It's a 50 Petaflop power coming from GPU's only! Even if these numbers are theoretical: IT'S MIND NUMBING!

angry Re: Using Video Card GPU

So why can't they just write a universal client for a wide range of GPUs using OpenGL or DirectX? I mean computer games do it for God's sake!

Why haven't they?

Re: Using Video Card GPU

The short answer: because it would be really, really slow.

For the long answer, have a look at the many previous discussions of this topic.
