Hello,
The saga continues. I have a clean SuSE 10.3 install. I then installed the latest Boinc software in the following way: Download into home directory. Using a file manager I checked the "executable" box in the icon's properties. I double clicked. Instantly, a Boinc directory appeared in my home directory. I created an icon on the desktop and linked it to the Run_Manager script. I checked the "executable" box in the icon's properties. I clicked on the Run_Manager icon and lo and behold, the manager programme began to run. I selected WCG as my source. Files were downloaded, and everything seemed to work. I returned to my computer this morning to find the screensaver had kicked in. When I signed in, the Boinc manager reported it was unable to locate host. There was nothing in messages, and no projects attached. I could not attach to localhost (even with password). So, I shut everything down and restarted my machine. I have not been able to restart manager. There is no WCG process in my KDE systems monitor. I checked stdoutdae.txt and there had been some work done but zero reported. Any thoughts? |

Hi, Mark.
You seem to be having nothing but problems, for which I am most regretful. However, this particular problem you describe sounds a lot like your earlier problem. Please will you bear with me and let me step you through some troubleshooting? To start with, I would like you to open a terminal window and type cd boinc Then paste the output into a post. Thank you. |

Hi, Didact., many thanks for the reply and kind offer of help. Here is the output (and I note that the batch files belong to root. Yet, the run manager file worked initially. Humm). Would it be useful to produce the text of the stdoutdae.txt file?

I suspect that by installing by double clicking, your shell automatically ran the script as root.
Rather than trying an unsafe workaround, I recommend you delete the scripts owned by root and then expand the original file again. This time, do it from the terminal according to these instructions: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/reg/ms/viewThankYouAll.do?platformPick=linux (making sure you are acting as the user that will normally be running BOINC.) If you leave all the rest of the files untouched, you won't need to reattach or lose any work in progress. Alternatively: if all this sounds too complicated, just delete the boinc directory and start again. |

Hello,
I assume the same result could be achieved by more simply changing the permissions to user/group rather than root. At any rate, I did as suggested. I confirmed the two script files no longer belonged to root. I created a new shortcut icon to run manager, and the boinc manager appeared but could not attach to any project. I deleted the boinc directory and reinstalled boinc using a terminal session, again using the WCG suggested steps. However, instead of running run-manager in a terminal session, I started it via a new desktop icon (as I do not want a terminal session hanging about), selected WCG as my project, and connected to my WCG account. Files were downloaded and are running. To test the system, I suspended work, and restarted the machine. I then restarted boinc manager using the icon and resumed the work. KDE's system monitor shows only the current session and no phantom sessions running. So far so good. However, the real test will be when I leave the machine alone for a day or two and the project work/upload/download cycle runs as appropriate. Mark |

It may have had the same result, but the scripts are generated dynamically, and I wanted to avoid any unexpected sideeffects (and I didn't have time to check it myself). So, I gave you a solution I was sure should work.

Understood and nice to know.
I should know by tomorrow whether there are any problems with this set up. I hope there are no problems. Although this rather long experience has taught me quite a bit about Linux (even to the point I have been able to install Lotus Notes and other programmes and maybe WCG), I still feel like a monkey as I can only glean a sense of the 'why' and 'how things work'. I do wish there was a handy reference manual to explain how WCG works in respect of Linux. My next step is to figure out a script that will start run-manager automatically whenever Linux starts. Anyway, many thanks for the kind help. Mark |

Woke up this morning to find the following message displayed:
"Boinc Manager - connection failed. Boinc manager is not able to connect to a boinc client. Would you like to try to connect again?" I click yes, and the same message reappears. So, it would seem that the ownership of the scripts and the original method of installation were not the cause. There is something else going on here. The complete stdoutdae.txt reports is attached. I have tried to copy out the process table from KDE System Guard, but not luck. It shows Boinc and Boinc Manager, and 3 wcg_hpf2_rosetta_5.20_i686-pc-linux-gnu processess, none active. KDE system guard is acting oddly as it is showing unnamed processes, and various commands are shown but the only ones active are ksyguard, xorg, and a few others.

----------------------------------------BOINCmgr connecting to BOINC core client is not critical for the client to run successfully. If you open up BOINCmgr, find the Advanced manager, Selected Computer and leaving the fields blank, say okay. If that fails, try again typing localhost. The password should get autofilled. If it does say okay. If that does not work, report back. ttyl.
