Re: THE EDWARDIANS - MARCH ON

Evening all

Had the odd shower but nothing serious; not so warm though.

Yes, Akela I had a turks head woggle myself when I became an ASM. I had the feeling that I had to go on a weekend course to earn it but it's so long ago that I couldn't be sure.

London forecast for Saturday is OK at the moment.

Ello every Peeps smile
*******************

I got rained off from garden I also washed car so that's sure and certain to bring in the precipitation
*****************
Woggles and other stuff
I still have my dads Turk head woggle and wore it when I was in the scouts 12th Tonbridge Swift patrol --patrol leader...

Our troop was led by skipper Branchet
a scouting family three sons one of whom featured on the front page of the Daily Mirror when he was trapped in the Lewisham train crash

The ASM was called Jim
cast in mould Of Baden Powell always wore the "proper " scout hat and shorts while all the troop wore berets

when we went to camp he only ever slept in a bivvy
We had old and I mean old army bell tents circa ww1.
depending on how far away the camp was we might be transported in a furniture removals van all the kit inside, tents,
kit bags , kids hanging out the back of the Van.
Tom Smith the local coal merchant removals chap lent the van for the trip
I remember one trip to IOW we camped near Ryde
there and back in the van
if it was local we had the trek carts doesnt half sound primitive
Now days it would have to be hire a minivan THE leaders would have to be CRB approved sad

We all Had Sheath knives and all we did with them was to whittle new woggles or cut up our damper smile

Re: THE EDWARDIANS - MARCH ON

Yes, those were the days - but I'm also sure that each generation says the same thing.

First camp I can remember was by the lake in Balcombe and we carried everything on the trek cart from Three Bridges. I passed that distance by train last year and wondered how we did it.

It was the same old army bell tent and I can remember it wasn't possible to find a completely level spot and the field sloped down to the lake. Hence, we all started as radii from the centre pole and ended up each morning in a bundle at one end.

But I remember it particularly because it was where I learnt to swim and found how my gran's bread pudding was good enough for it to be demanded for all future camps.

Keeping my fingers crossed for tomorrow's weather.
