ZoneAlarm always generates a lot of posts because the ZA icon flashes once a second when BOINC Manager communicates with the BOINC client (called the heartbeat). Here is a post by Sekerob on 12 Dec 2007 in which he switches from ZoneAlarm to the more configurable free Comodo firewall:

Re: Problems Firewall Programs

Here is a helpful post by Francois at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2251#15206
Hi,

Please note that some firewall applications, such as Peerguardian, may block access to the Almaden IBM lab where the server is, then prevent downloading WU and uploading results, which will cause an Agent Paused condition.
Watch the logs and, if appropriate, edit the block list, or create an allow list wit the range 129.89.33.130-129.89.33.139.

François

Problem Reported with Windows Messenger

Here is a post by squid_80 about a problem he had running FightAIDS@Home with Windows Messenger loaded: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=8561#79912
It seems the culprit is windows live messenger v8.0. If I crunch without it loaded, I get no warnings and 1 WU so far has come up as Valid with a couple more pending. After I start messenger, the warnings start showing up in the log.
The exact build number of messenger that is causing the problem is 8.0.0812.00. I'd advise anyone else having problems with FAAH to check if they're using this version and try crunching without it running.

Re: Problem Reported with Windows Messenger

Lawrence, that's a good list. The only one we know about is McAfee 8.0 which has a bug in it so we advise people not to run World Community
Grid if they have 8.0 and also upgrade to a newer version. A long time ago we checked in with McAfee but they were not interested in doing anything about it. We'll get someone to look at the list. Thanks again.

Re: Windows Media Player EHtray.exe holding up BOiNC.

MS at it's best..... found this on the BOINC dev forum. It seems the 'new' process mentioned below is stopping BOiNC from getting access to the Idle CPU time. The activity is shown as an icon in the system tray. Empirically, if BOiNC is not progressing, exit this process and see if the agent moves on:

Ladies and gents I finally tracked down the culprit, and didn't have to install 5.8.0.

After going through every single item in the Services and Startup tabs in MSCONFIG...I found the cause.

It appears to be a new process called "ehtray.exe" from Microsoft for Media Player 11 for the Media Center Tray Icon. Good ol' Microsoft.

Anyway, disabling that one process in the Startup tab allows BOINC to kick into gear as designed.

Possibly some info that needs to be passed on?

Added: Here's an info sheet on ehtray.exe: http://www.auditmypc.com/process/ehtray.asp . It also is running with Windows Media Player 10.0 and Microsoft Media Centre. In addition, there are 3 more EHxxxx.exe processes, which on my machine do not seem to stop BOINC advance at all.
