BOINC 6 and UD

Will WCG wait until BOINC 6 is released before the UD agent is completely phased out?

Re: BOINC 6 and UD

Saw that comment somewhere before made by someone else and can only imagine UD was left there because of sticky issues like the persistent proxy problems (even without the WCG specific SSL part). There 'was' supposed to be strong focus on that, but see no buzz whatsoever on that topic. Maybe Didactylos knows from the email list that BOINC circulates.

6 is very much alpha (the whole 6.1.x series is) and anyone attempting it in production is earning my sympathy and recommendation to see a professional. Tried it once and will not again until several point releases into 6.2..x like 6.2.13 whenever that comes out.

At any rate, created a new dummy account just to test if a new member would get it offered and it still is. Think it to be very wise not to push the envelope yet removing the fall-back for those who want to continue using it on low end machines with e.g. win98.

Re: BOINC 6 and UD

I'm not quite sure why BOINC 6 is in public alpha. They are nowhere near completing all the enhancements scheduled for the release, let alone all the outstanding bugs.

Expect it to be alpha for some time to come.

There is a bugfix release for 5.10 in the pipeline, so watch out, folks....

Re: BOINC 6 and UD

I cannot comment on if BOINC 6 will be out before we completely phase out the UD agent. Mostly because I do not know when BOINC 6 will be released.

However, having said that there are certain things that we want working in the BOINC client prior to the UD shutdown. One of the most important of those is the proxy issues many users have reported.

We will not shut down UD until a very high percentage of our members are able to and have migrated to BOINC.
