Folk run projects because they choose to.
Your post almost implies it is their responsibility to do so. I don't think you can get folk to crunch by running them thru a guilt trip. You could have mentioned that crunching can be fun, can be competitive....you can make new friends etc etc. Instead the emphasis is on you should, you should.........that just alienates your potential contributor. |

Good point. To recruit people, you have to be treat WCG like a product and sell it. Guilt only works if you have a large consensus of opinion behind you. So if you're selling deodorant or life insurance, it can work - but you've got hold-outs even in such areas. I make some effort to push WCG to people I do computer work for or to people who I think are technically savvy, but I don't try to inform people who are strictly end users since by and large, they don't even understand the concept of wasted cpu cycles. Plus, the current boinc client, in my opinion, isn't ready for prime time. Maybe when version 6 comes out and has a couple of bug fixes I'll change my mind. If at that point it seems user proof (more or less), then I'll start telling everyone who will listen.

You win some, you lose some - the thing to do is to keep trying.
My latest conversation on the subject went like this: Dec 26 16:57:58 <Didactylos> Anyway - crunchers, come and lurk on #WCG and we'll see how it goes. Dec 26 17:01:22 <geminidomino> .recall WCG Dec 26 17:01:22 <sporksbot> [WCG] (1/1) World Community Grid http://wcg.userfriendly.org/ Dec 26 17:05:24 <Didactylos> geminidomino: I haven't burned it in letters of fire on your eyelids yet? Dec 26 17:05:32 * Didactylos is fail. Dec 26 17:06:12 <geminidomino> Didactylos: Never heard of it before now Dec 26 17:06:19 <Didactylos> :-o Dec 26 17:06:19 <geminidomino> Just signed up tho... the client for linux looks like a$$ Dec 26 17:06:28 <Didactylos> :-S Dec 26 17:06:54 <Didactylos> You must have the GTK1 version. Dec 26 17:07:02 <geminidomino> I have the one it gave me Dec 26 17:07:20 <Didactylos> Anyway, you hardly ever need the GUI. Dec 26 17:07:41 <Didactylos> Run it as a service, ..., profit. Dec 26 17:07:46 <geminidomino> Yeah... now to see if there's an option for it to minimize into the task bar Dec 26 17:07:50 <geminidomino> I run linux Dec 26 17:08:16 <Didactylos> /service/daemon/whatever you want to call it. Dec 26 17:08:24 <geminidomino> "service" is MS talk. :) Dec 26 17:08:29 <geminidomino> will it run in daemon mode then? Dec 26 17:08:37 <Didactylos> init.d services are commonly called such. Dec 26 17:08:44 <Didactylos> It will indeed. Dec 26 17:08:51 <Didactylos> Want to take this to #WCG? |

It's harder to market towards the 'non-tech savvy' type of people. They make up the MAJORITY of the population, I typically run into on a daily.
Even marketing toward the tech savvy can be a big challenge. It is true that you win some and loose some. I think I have lost more then I have won, however. On the flip side some tech savvy people look as an internet application running as a port to which a hacker can exploit and this makes the job harder if not impossible. I figure they are right within their own right for saying such a thing if they don't want that small risk. The conversation went better with two other people after the previous post. They seem willing to look into it and at least and watch the video for the WCG. I think it comes down to trust and proper socialization a lot of the time. Something, I'm not all the great at doing and try to work on being better. Then the internet is such a dark alley to begin with for most people out there. Trust is almost automatically denied by default. |
