Crooks_UK.
----------------------------------------That's an excelent idea (advertising through Google + Yahoo). And is easier than others. WCG (backed by IBM) has only to propose to Google & Yahoo this. For sure these companies will see a benefit in advertising "free help" for world's problems. They are already "green" in they're statements. Let's propose being "helpfull". Super Idea. My guess is that NOBODY at WCG has any Addvertising & Marketing strategy going now. And something must be done ! It is not right lingering in small numbers and effect, when all it takes is some "high level" meetings. |

CALL or EMAIL (for example) WorldVision (www.worldvision.ca - Who will vote for that ? Vote? Just get on with it and contact them. I know some members have put a great deal of effort into communicating with other charities that WCG can cooperate, and WCG contact all the charities they can. Sometimes successfully, sometimes not. The thing to do is to keep trying. Look at the partner list: WCG are already affiliated with a number of major cancer charities, and hundreds of other organisations. |

At least I'm not the only "nutcase" that thinks something must be done by WTC to substantialy increase our numbers.
----------------------------------------In the future people will go to the more advertised "free" grid and right now that's Folding@Home. They did a little more advertising and strived to bring grid computing to the powerfull GPU & CELL graphic processors. That's why they've boosted up in only one year to more than a Petaflop per second. And they are not even backed up by some mighty Company like IBM. They are just Stanford. But what they did right ? They have a donations page : http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Donate They mustered active help from Sony, Dell, ATI, Google, Apple, Intel .. to name a few: http://folding.stanford.edu/ And they are not having a big , powerfull ally like IBM as they're "godfather". Why can't we (WTC BOARD) do something like that ? |

To reply to Didactylos .
----------------------------------------I hope that's not the atitude of WCG Board about advertising: Let the users to be bothered about that. What power I have on the negotiation table from WCG with WorldVision ? What am I ? Just a user ! How about this Novel Idea: that somebody from IBM or WCG BOARD bring the case to them ? Will that be more succesfull ? Will that be the right thing to do for a WCG BOARD member, to relly on the people he is supposed to bring to the grid? I think this model of Advertising & Marketing failed and that is why no Banks, Insurance company, Parfume manufacturor, Politician and you name it is not using it !!! Let's not put the head in the sand and just name it: Something needs to be done by WCG before all users are going slowly slowly to more succesfull Grids. And by succesfull, I mean bigger in number & flops. That is the hole Idea of a grid , not shear loyality but shear number. What is WCG answer to that. ? |

I've read all of these threads with a lot of interest and applaud the zeal and desire to have World Community Grid grow. We all want that.
But let me get right to the point..... We are not going to enable the website to be a collection box for money. There's plenty of other people out there doing that already. Our hands are busy on keyboards to support the research, the website, and the hosting, etc.. We don't have time to hold our hands out to collect money. World Community Grid tried extensive advertisement last year, especially in magazines and newspapers. And we didn't design the campaign and neither did IBM. A major international advertisement built the campaign. But that did not produce any significant results. People probably glance at the add and think it's a great idea and tell themselves to get on the computer and join. But by the time they finish the paper they've seen the adds about the weekend football games and the 20% off on the 40 inch flat screen and World Community Grid is forgotten. We feel the best way to communicate World Community Grid is by word-of-mouth. People worry about unknown stuff running on their computer much like people are leery of hiring people that they don't know and have to rely solely on a resume. That's why, when hiring people, a personal reference is always a deal maker because it gives the candidate immediate trust. In the same way, a personal reference about World Community Grid will do the same thing. That's why we have the tell-a-friend email on the home page. BTW, in 2007, 3,300 people used the tell-a-friend feature and as a result, 1,200 new people joined. That's pretty impressive. We do believe strongly that if we were to start collecting donations, it would detract us from our mission, which is providing a platform where researchers can run humanitarian research for free and a place where volunteers can have a little fun while helping a good cause. So if you have a little extra money, go ahead and give to one of the other orgs that has their hand out and keep crunching for free here. Thank you for asking the question!!!! |

What about collaborating with big IT/Internet companies and Charity Companies to get users from they're side of the pool ?
----------------------------------------Will High level meetings be involved in this endeavor? Or we are just as happy as being silent at this level ? |
