BOINC + Windows Defender Issue

It seems Microsoft has 'Not Yet Classified' BOINC as being a 'Permitted' program. Yet, Yahoo Messenger, Myspace IM among many other programs are listed as being permitted automatically.

BOINC is automatically blocked each time Windows Vista starts up as a result of having not been 'permitted' by Windows Defender to startup. It requires a physical right click on the Blocked Programs icon in the try allow the program to run on each Windows startup.

Other programs listed as 'Not Yet Classified' startup each time after clicking allow and permit after installation. BOINC does not do this for some reason even when you gave it permission after installation.

How long will it be until a new, fixed version of BOINC exists for the masses(average person) running Windows Defender and or having Windows Vista?

Until BOINC 6 is released. This won't be soon, sorry.

Re: BOINC + Windows Defender Issue

According a post by another Community Advisor installing as service (uninstall and reinstall) without the BOINC autostart option allows it to run without Windows Defender protests. The price is getting no graphics, but that can be overcome by exiting the BOINC service and manually starting BOINCmgr (with the UAC alert). Booting would restart the service. Also, the BOINC core client will run even if no-one has signed in or all users sign out.

Further, the shut-down of Vista with a service install does away with the "too fast" closing damage to work units if using the 5.10.30 version. With single user install and signing out the damage still occurs.

If Vista final service pack 1 is released that experience may change. Reading of BSODs with Vista SP1 RC1, not going to try and find out.

Re: BOINC + Windows Defender Issue

Error message: "Windows has blocked some startup programs"

SYMPTOMS
When you start a Windows Vista-based computer, you receive the following Windows warning message in the notification area at the far right of the taskbar:

Windows has blocked some startup programs.

Windows blocks programs that require permission to run when Windows starts. Click to view blocked programs.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because a program or a service that has User Account Control (UAC) restrictions tries to start during the Windows Vista startup process or logon process. To simplify these processes, Software Explorer blocks programs or services that require UAC confirmation from running.

Re: BOINC + Windows Defender Issue

"User Account Control (UAC) is a new security feature in Windows Vista that requires all users to log on and run in standard user privileges mode instead of as administrator with full administrative rights, thus prevent unauthorized or accidental changes that could destabilize the computers or allows virus and malware to exploit the system-level privileges provided to the local administrator to attack the network security, compromise computer safety and privacy, and damage files and settings in the network."

There are a few ways that you can use to turn off the UAC, but most home and personal users should find method to disable UAC via Control Panel easiest to do.

Method 1 - Using Control Panel

1. Click Start and then open Control Panel.
2. In the Control Panel, click User Accounts and Family Safety.
3. Click User Accounts.
4. Click Turn User Account Control on or off.

It looks like a future version of BOINC might need to turn off the UAC upon installation.

Method 3 - Using Registry Editor

1. Run Registry Editor by typing “regedit” in Start Search or command prompt.
2. In Registry Editor, navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\System
3. Locate the following DWORD registry subkey in the right pane:

EnableLUA
4. Right click and choose modify or double click on EnableLUA to modify the setting. On valud prompt, set the new value to 0.
5. Exit from Registry Editor.
6. Restart the computer.
7. To enable the UAC again, simply change back the value of EnableLUA to 1.

Re: BOINC + Windows Defender Issue

Microsoft provides a kit to 'DISABLED UAC PROMPT FOR A CERTAIN APPLICATION.'

Result
Sometimes, you want to disable UAC prompt for certain application on a Windows Vista computer. You do not want to disable UAC for the whole computer.

Resolution
Using the tool and steps below, you may disable UAC prompt for the specific application. This does not disable the User Acount Control feature for the whole computer.

1) Download and install the Application Compatibility Toolkit from this link:

Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.0
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.as...DA2971&displaylang=en (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.as...DA2971&displaylang=en)

2) In the Start menu, locate the new folder. Find the shortcut icon for Compatibility Administrator. Right click it and clik Run as administrator.

3) In the left hand pane, right-click on the database under Custom Databases and select Create New, and select Application Fix.

4) Enter the name and other details of the application you want to alter behavior on and then browse to it to select it. Click Next.

5) Click Next until you are in the Compatibility Fixes screen.

6) On the Compatibility Fixes screen, find the item RunAsInvoker, and check it.

7) Click Next and then Finish.

8) Select File and Save As. Save the file as a filename.SDB type file in a directory you will easily find it.

9) Copy the <filename>.sdb file to the Vista computer you want to alter the elevation prompt behavior on.

10) Click Start>All Programs>Accessories. Right click Command Prompt and click Run as administrator.

11) Run the command below:

sdbinst <path>\<filename>.sdb

For example, if you saved the .SDB file as abc.sdb in the c:\Windows folder, the command should be like this:

sdbinst c:\windows\abc.sdb

It should prompt: Installation of <name> complete.
