confused Forum search is very painfull and... HELP, 20 PCs looking for more than 30hrs of ... heat

To be short,, I find the forum search very painfull. The more search term I enter the more result I get. and the more they are irrelevent.. There should be a syntax help somewhere because a default "OR" mode is not as usefull and most are accustomed to..AND... it seams like there's a bug, I sometime can't hit the search button especialy once I've hit ENTER,,,(unless I refresh or hit reset) (witch "reset button" I think is totaly stupid as there are only 4 fields) I won't train myself so stop hitting enter ,... as ENTER is common almost EVERYWHERE!!!
all for obvious reasons

(Firefox 2)

I was looking for HELP with this issue " ...

I live in Quebec and have about 20 computers at home and wish to heat myself and the home with Boink... :)
6 of them are Core 2 Duo @ 2400Mhz and 6 other above 2Ghz ... I have 6 of them around my desk with the exaust fan near the ground... I wear 2-3 pair of socks, dual layer pants ect ect ... I collect my pee in big 10L and go put this in my compost every week to keep it and it's red worms alive. hehe off subject ...

I just do not yet have anothers routers and RJ-45's to link them all to internet , SO I wish to plug them once every week or 10 DAYS as it seams possible,, Now , Even if I have disabled FAAH and tried subscribing to many (5) project I find worty,,,

I can't have more than 2 day of work on some of emm. It also seams one have more than 10 days.

It's very confusing ,,, Where are the project deadline and sheduler algo OFFICIALY explained ???

In the longrun It would be nice being able to put ~50 day of work on a USB nand drive and automate the process of UP/DOWN on insertion on all my machines sparcely located.... ALSO please help with automating the installation process...

I'm even thinking about running boink on PCs witout HD with USB's boots

Hello pkoi,
So much area to cover. I'll just answer on a few topics.

BOINC 5.10.30 allows you to set a large cache by selecting My Grid - Device Manager - (selected profile) and going down to Workunit Cache Settings where you can set:
Connect to network about every 0.1 days
Cache 8.9 extra days of work

Then click on Save to save your new profile.

Currently most projects have a 9 day deadline but makeup work units sent out to 'reliable' computers to complete quorums have much shorter deadlines, as do Beta project work units when they are being run. The cache size will probably never reach the deadline size because BOINC has built-in safety factors.

SEARCH is minimal. I tend to use the Google Toolbar with the 'Search only on the current Web site' for complex searches and long for the search tools available on Unix in the early 80s.

BOINC is explained in http://www.boinc-wiki.info/index.php?title=Main_Page and http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/SoftwareDevelopment

In general, it is difficult to transfer BOINC work units from one machine to another. It can be done, but you have to be careful to select the same homogenous redundancy class to download to and transfer to ( ie. Windows, x86 Linux, etc.)

Some work unit requirements are collected here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=14608#135703

tongue If sheduler can't make good estimate it should at least recognise it's error !!!

I finnaly managed to get 3 router and I use Wifi-USB dongle to update some. Now what I wish to complain about Is I have some, 1.8Ghz wich I am sure were 100% dedicated the whole week , bechmark were acurate. but when I went to update them there were 6 day of work to be done by tomorow 27th-01-08

and... I was not able to add any more work I mean ANY I lowered additional work from 8 day to ... 7 6 5 4 ...2 1 and not only do I get no work IT F*^@$#( SAY NOTHING ...

I mean I don't know anything of WHY.... I ASK MY computer to ask fot 8 DAY but... I can't I know ...MY SELF... here... localy ...why my own machine don't even want ...to try... asking for more work ??? well I am pretty sure it's because he/my pc/boinc suppose It can't do the 6 day of work untill tomorow so IT BUGS silently,,, So I aborted PAINFULLY "One By One" the 5 task to leave only the one it could finish by tomorow, Still It get no work and no message of why It Don't even bother asking.

It finnaly got his work 4 hours later when 100% empty...

ThankYou Very much for your last reply smile

PS: I haven't been able to use http://thelazyslug.com/boinc_deploying_to_pcs.htm I've made custom MST MSI but when running I always get Administrator right needed...or something... and I am administator... anyway it's just too late to figure out ,,, I don't have that much pc for prefering a 50 step zigzag network install reather than visit each and and click an usb EXE ... Done

hehe .,, have a nice day

Hello pkoi,
The scheduler algorithm is changed / modified very frequently by the developers. It does not allow the user to control scheduling. All I can suggest is that you make sure that there are no 'local preferences' overriding your global preferences. You can check this in BOINC Manager - Advanced - Preferences.

Complaints about the scheduling algorithm might get answers if you post on the BOINC message board at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/
