is boinc ctive, only when you dont use the computer? because i sometimes use my computer just for reacing and it often only takes about 10% of the cpu power. is it still active then?
because i want to know if, when it is active, your computer runs slower. if so, i cant put it on all of my computers. or does it only use the cpu, so that it wont bother you? |

BOINC only uses the power left over after you are doing something else, even reacing, since it runs at low priority.

BOINC is active when you want it to be active.

What i want is: that the boinc agent doesn't make my other applications go slower, and still runs at maximum speed. so it should go as fast as it can, as long as I don't notice it.
which setting do I have to use? |

These are the relavent settings with appropriate options chosen:
Do work while computer is in use? Yes Do work only after computer is idle for: 0.0 minutes Stop work after computer is idle for: 0.0 minutes Network Usage Confirm before connecting to Internet? No Disconnect when done? No =========================== Those are the important ones, the rest you can set to whatever you prefer. This will let BOINC use all the spare processing power your computer has. AS stated above, BOINC runs at low priority so whenever you use the computer for something else, BOINC will yield up to 100% of the processing power to other programs. So it is a true background application that only uses CPU cycles that you don't need for anything else. The only caveat here is that BOINC will not yield RAM or virtual memory. If one of those gets filled up then your computer will slow down. For example, I let BOINC run during normal computer use and never notice it's even there. But when I play a demanding game like Crysis, I have to shut BOINC off because it causes the game to stutter and freeze. |

From the Community Advisor's post
BOINC only uses the power left over after you are doing something else, even reacing, since it runs at lowest priority. The highlighted means that everything else runs and only the spare cycles are allocated to BOINC science. Sometimes disk I/O will cause slight interference on slower machines. For those machines there are the times of day and memory limitation that can be controlled. I.e. you can tell BOINC to do nothing at all when you are using the computer, but that means that on average 90% of the cycles remain unused. From the Community Advisor's post. is it possible to let him stop using RAM when you need it?

i checked my cpu and, while running boinc. it sais that 78% of cpu is unused and boinc uses 0,0% cpu, although i do see that he does someting(the % of my project still goes up)

But when I play a demanding game like Crysis, I have to shut BOINC off because it causes the game to stutter and freeze. Not quite correct as the 'memory % while idle or in use' options can restrict BOINC RAM use while operating the computer. Set it to 50% when in use and BOINC will go into 'Waiting for Memory' if it reaches that target %. As for using swap file, that could be ideally set with a large minimum and allowed free expansion. With the 'Leave in Memory' option off, BOINC will try to free the RAM by writing portions to the swap file on disk. As for the 78% comment, as noted the BOINC science is the process using the CPU idle time, not BOINC.exe itself. That uses very little to manage the science processes. |
