I am trying my hand at Ubuntu 7.10. I have the OS installed on the hard disc using the entire disc, (not dual boot) Then did all 149 updates to Unbutu.
----------------------------------------Upon attempting to install BOINC I get the following error message: gedit has not been able to detect the character coding. Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file. Select a character coding from the menu and try again. Total Noob on this OS so anyone able to guide me here? Thanks! NN ![]() |

Hello Nortnarg.
Here is a recent thread discussing Ubuntu: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=17601#142551 To find more threads, click on Search ( after My Forum Profiles) and enter Ubuntu, then the BOINC Agent Support forum (any member). That will get you a LOT of threads. Lawrence |

Ok, I did some more homework on this and it seems to be installed and running.
----------------------------------------Here is what I did in case someone wants to comment, or another newbie to Ubuntu needs to install BOINC. First I went to the WCG grid home page, logged in and downloaded the BOINC client for linux. That placed an icon on my desktop. Just clicking on the icon attemps to open with gedit. I take it that is a text editor and does not work. You get the error message as I posted above. I then right click on the icon and chose properties. In properties go to Permissions. In the Permissions window check the box "Excute" (Allows to run as a program) A BOINC folder shows up on the desktop now besides the original icon. Open Synaptic Package installer (System> Administration> Synaptic Package Installer) Search for BOINC. files associated with BOINC that need to be installed are then listed in the right pane. Select all those files to be installed. Click Apply, and let the files be installed. When done, go to Applications> Accessories> BOINC Manager, and click to run. It will then start the program and go through the setup and attach to a project. Up and running now with no apparent problems yet. If I did this weird or wrong, please comment and let me know. Thanks! NN ![]() ![]() |

Thanks for the replies . . .
----------------------------------------Update. The stuck Work unit aborted with an unrecoverable error in messages. New DDDT work was started and is now completed, running on a Human Proteome Folding job now. Will consider this a success! ![]() |
