The Help Conquer Cancer unit I received today is due in two days. My machine is only on part-time and won't likely be able to finish the estimated 10-hour unit within 48 hours. The deadline should be one week at least, just like the other projects.

Hello wchoff,
That is unusual. I drew a HCC work unit last night and it was due 31 Dec 2007. I don't know what happened to your work unit. Sounds as though somebody was working on the server Friday and did something. If you cannot make the deadline, then just abort it with a free conscience. Lawrence |

I have noticed the work units with short deadlines are work units that were earlier sent out but never returned before the usual "return by" deadline or returned with errors and were sent out again for another computer to process them.

Hello Larry Fine,
----------------------------------------Yes, but they are supposed to be sent to computers rated 'Reliable' by the server. wchoff must have been doing a lot of work recently to allow a part-time machine to be rated 'Reliable'. Once he aborts, he should lose that rating for awhile and will not get any makeup work units with short deadlines. I do not want him to feel under pressure to run his system for longer than he wants to. Volunteer grid computing is supposed to be fun, not stern duty with tight deadlines. Ok. I guess as you said in his case he was recently doing a lot of work and got a "reliable" rating. Last month I upgraded my computer to an AMD X2 6400+ and 2 GB PC6400 memory just so I can contribute more to WCG. I now run 24/7 and regularly get work units with short deadlines. I do not mind because I can get those work units completed in time. Perhaps the WCG techs can extend out the deadlines a day or two for those work units that have to sent out again to allow the slower machines to complete those work units.
Also, since upgrading it seems that my machine is faster than about 85% of the other machines taking part in WCG, but I do see some that are faster (by looking at the hours other computers take to complete the same workunits that my computer works on). What currently is the best processor out there for crunching WCG's work units? Larry |

Hello Larry Fine,
Currently Core 2 is the fastest architecture. From memory (possibly wrong) the Athlon 64 converts x86 instructions into 3 streams of micro-operations. Core 2 converts x86 instructions into 4 streams of micro-operations. This makes it impossible for an Athlon 64 to match a Core 2 at the same clock megahertz rate. Lawrence |

I guess that explains why I got the 6400+ and motherboard for $180. The Intel Duo's with motherboard were priced much higher. Regardless, in a few years both will not be worth very much. Octo-cores will be here in a year or two. Ten years from now a 6400+ and the Duo will be like what the Pentium Pro is today.

wchoff, is it a beta work unit? It may not be marked beta even if it is. Don't opt in for beta work with part time machines, the deadlines are commonly shorter than normal.
This is only a possibility. |

If your computer downloads a work unit with about 2 days deadline, then it is considered a reliable host and was sent a work unit to finish. But there has not been any change in the deadlines for the first set of work units sent out to members.

What are the different host ratings? Is it just reliable and nonreliable? Or many different tiers of rankings?
I would not mind running more of the "high pressure" deadline tasks. I run my laptop (2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo @ 100% power) pretty much full time (1.5 days of work per calender day). The humming of fans has been putting me to sleep. ^_^ Is it possible to opt for more or tweak settings for more? |
