Yes, I've read the FAQ and every other suggestion. Yes, I have tried every suggestion that has been listed anywhere. No, I still cannot get Windows Defender and UAC to quit blocking BOINC from starting up. I chose a service installation and that is what I want running.
I have launched the installation as an administrator, installed it to another location than the default, set the service account to an adminstrator account on the machine, made sure that the directory has full control for the service account, added the BOINC directory and each exe file to the list of files for Windows Defender to ignore. NOTHING works. It is still blocked everytime I start up and I have to manually launch it. The only thing that does work is to turn off this stupid, idiotic, irritating UAC piece of garbage. |

Hello mhotek,
Sorry to hear this. Could you tell us just which Vista OS you are running? I assume that boinc.exe is installed as a service and being blocked. What is the message displayed when it is blocked? Which account was used to install BOINC? Is it the WCG BOINC 5.10.30 installation package? Lawrence |

hi mhotek,
----------------------------------------yes it's a massive pain, but if you installed the BOINC service, the BOINCmgr GUI that is being blocked by UAC/Win Defender can be happily ignored. In fact, suggest to remove the autostart shortcut, so you can choose to launch the GUI when you need it (see last para of this post). How to check if the service runs fine: 1. Open TaskManager (Ctrl-Shift-Esc keys simultaneous), go to Service tab and see if BOINC is running (first frame of screenshot). You wont be able to see the actual science processes here. 2. Obtain *Free* copy of a Microsoft utility called Process Explorer. That will show in the process tab all the sciences running (second frame of screenshot shows 4 simultaneous of 3 different kinds in red circle). During the service install you should have had a screen like the below. Installing that is another pain. I installed is as Administrator, which in default is a hidden user without password (OEM ![]() As you see I unticked the Launch option (which is in fact the GUI part only). The screensaver was ticked just to see if i could get it to work. Yes it will, but just shows the bouncing WCG logo with job progress info. A waste of space and cycles. Let us know and we'll talk further.
