Hello,
I have a question that I couldn't answer with any of the online resources. How many projects can I add without impacting the performance of my machine? I read the requirements and most of the projects require 250 mg of RAM and one required 500 mb Ram. I have 1 gb, so I thought I could safely add two projects without impacting the performance of my system. Your thoughts? I would think that I could probably add a 3rd project that only runs when the system is idle? Let me know what you think. You may want to post a response to this in your help documentation. Then again, maybe I'm the only one curious. Take care, Matt. |

I don't recollect anyone having made the mental contortion before. You can add as many projects as you like to BOINC.... there are like 60 on offer inside and outside of WCG.
----------------------------------------The question is really, what can be run concurrently? Plays no role on a single core machine. Taking the Minimum System Requirements page info, multiply what is specified there by the number of CPU cores you want to allocate to BOINC. If you have 4, you can choose between 1 through 4. Even then, the probability of multiple concurrent processes running their peek requirements simultaneously is not hi. At any rate, 1gb RAM is good for running any 2 WCG projects simultaneous on a dual core. For a 4 core, I'd recommend 2gb. BOINC is smart btw in that if you say for it to not use e.g. more than 75% of RAM, it will pause one or the other big job and try with a smaller one until enough ram is available. Such a condition is signalled in the BOINCmgr Tasks window. hope this helps to make up your mind. cheers

What Sekerob used many words to say is this: only one project runs at once.
Unless you have a multicore or hyperthreaded computer. In that case, one task will run per core - although you can limit this in your preferences if you wish. |

au contraire...
----------------------------------------I have tried about every BOINC project out there, and found only one BOINC project that will run concurrently with other BOINC projects --- dependency spider at http://depspid.net It also needs to be connected to the net, otherwise it just sits there. If you are offline, that doesn't hurt anything. It doesn't seem to care about the BOINC resource manager. Other projects swap in and out, but it just keeps doing its thing. I started it up to check again, but at the moment they don't have any work. The website says that they had a hardware failure last month, and they need to rewrite something. They won't go again for a few weeks. Normally, it takes a few %. This will also work on single core computers. This is similar to the non-BOINC DIMES project, which can run concurrently with either BOINC or UD. I haven't tried DIMES concurrently with DepSpid.

?
----------------------------------------(insider info needed: Is there a entrepreneur from Amsterdam in your neighborhood who opened a branch.... one place in the Dutch Capital (no its not The Hague) is famous and is called The Babylon ;?) If i have work on the machine of different BOINC projects (outside of WCG), they will happily run concurrently on the duo or quad.... the best ever observed was 4 different, from different DCs on the quad each using 1 core.
