Updated BOINC Client

So I updated my BOINC Client for both my computers to the 5.10.30.

Due to some technical difficulties I now have 5 device profiles.

When looking at my stats here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewMemberInfo.do?userName=blizzie
it currently says 2 Devices Installed cause it hasn't updated yet. But when it does it'll say there's 5. How long will it show 5 devices until it becomes inactive on the stats page. Don't really want friends thinking I'm using 5 computers now. wink

And is there a change log for the BOINC versions? I looked on their website but it only mentions 5.10.28 for Windows (7.08 MB). o.o

Edit: Also do the work units that I was working on before updating wasted? I tried to copy it over but it didn't pick it up. So I had to do another clean installation. *sigh* Wasted units on my record. crying

Re: Updated BOINC Client

Hello Blizzie,
My Grid - Device Manager has drop-down menus that control how many devices are shown. The default value shows all devices With Result(s) Returned: in the last 14 days. The device count will always include all decices ever registered (unless this will eventually be changed to just show the same number as displayed - a requested feature).
And is there a change log for the BOINC versions?

If you could not install over the old BOINC version for some reason, then your old work units are lost. What went wrong?

Aww dang. So I guess it'll permanently show 5 devices on my stats, until that feature is added.

I copied my projects folder over but the work would not show up. When I copied the whole BOINC folder over, it would just replace it with .20 instead of .30

Ah well. Lost work units. sad crying

Re: Updated BOINC Client

Hi Blizzie,

Respective Versions: Our Start Here forum contains many subject specific FAQ's. This one BOINC: Release Information & Version History has links to the present main version (5.10), the condensed (the one of Lawrence) and a very detailed with all the little changes from point release to point release.

As for lost jobs, If a new install is created, BOINC will automatically fetch in the first instance new tasks and register a new device. In either way, migrating over old work or aborting the new install work fetched, you'll loose something.

sorry

Oh, for those being regular readers: It seems that the project that hosts all the BOINC developer fora, websites, trac etc is going offline Thursday night Dec. 6, 2007. http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=2320

Look again. 5.10.30 is the Berkeley production version for Windows this morning. Since 5.10.31 addresses a memory leak fix and 5.10.32 addresses a fix for 5.10.31 which didn't quite work, they promise another new one shortly.

Edit: Also do the work units that I was working on before updating wasted? I tried to copy it over but it didn't pick it up. So I had to do another clean installation. *sigh* Wasted units on my record.
Strange. Nothing should normally be lost.

I downloaded 5.10.30 today. I usually stop the BOINC execution, even though they say they can handle it automatically. I simply allow BOINC to reinstall in the existing location over top of the old BOINC. I have done several BOINC updates over the last 2 years with no loss of workunits due to a BOINC install. After that, BOINC can restart. Perhaps you set a new install directory, so BOINC lost track of the existing workunits. They may still be out there in the old directory, and could be moved [to the new one?]. (?) I think I'd stop accepting new "new" workunits to drain the queue, if this is contemplated.

I had some workunits awaiting report, so did a manual update. It's always worth keeping the last stable BOINC version in my download directory, in case I need to do a quick backout for some reason. I have a copy of 5.10.7, so tossed out my old 5.8.whatever. That one's TOO old. cool

Here's another what I would call "optimistic project forecast", considering I just downloaded 5/10/30 today:

12/20/2007 10:19:21 AM|Pirates@Home|Message from server: Starting in 102 days and 11 hours, project will require a minimum BOINC core client version of 5.11.0. You are currently using version 5.10.30; please upgrade before this time.

Re: Updated BOINC Client

I am running several projects to check the scheduler in 5.10.30. It has one project that seems to be close to deadline, so it runs it most of the time. HOWEVER, it swaps out every now and then and tries another. It only leaves it there for about 2 seconds and realizes that it has the other project close to deadline, so goes back to it. This happens frequently. Project resource allocations are set to equal for everything.
