I've been noticing on these cancer projects that if I view the graphics on screen that the clock counts up not down. If I don't view the graphics while it's working it seems to make normal progress. Any idea why this is happening? It didn't use to do this.

Hi mattyfd99. Viewing the graphics uses CPU power. It probably just means you slowed down the crunching and the clock is re-estimating how long the finish time will be for the wu.

it was the time to completion clock that counts up not down.

Yes and Didactylos knew perfectly well what you meant and that it was'nt Big Ben that was going backwards.

Hi mattyfd99. As Diana G says, the time to completion is an estimate, and its accuracy can vary depending on a number of factors.
While her explanation is plausible, the graphics shouldn't have a significant effect on runtime. How frequently are you seeing this behaviour? How long are you viewing the graphics for? I believe there is a setup cost in starting the graphics, so if you just open then close the graphics, that may cause the time estimate to change. One way of confirming this is by checking the elapsed time - if this doesn't increase significantly between opening and closing the graphics, then you will have confirmation for this theory. Also, the percentage through the work unit is relevant here. The completion estimate is more sensitive to small variations early on in the work unit. Towards the end, BOINC has reliable data about the work unit, and the completion estimate is usually very accurate. |

That's right.
That happens on my screen as well. And I'm not using a graphics view. I look at the standard work screen, and the time to completion counter is always counting up, not down. It has nothing to do with re-estimating. If you leave the screen open for 30 mintues, the time to completion is 30 minutes later. If you close this screen, and open it, the time to completion is 1 hour less, as it should have been in the first place. |

hooi Tvdsluis,

Another possible explanation is the strange way the progress percentage is increasing. I have reported it already for DDDT on October 27 in thread "Faster new batches of work" (see JmBoullier [Oct 27, 2007 4:09:42 AM] ).
----------------------------------------As I said "The progress percentage is running from xx.000 % to about xx.090 % and then it jumps to xx+1.000 %. Between .000 and .090 the progress is by .001." I have run only two HCC WUs so far but both behaved the same. Obviously while the percentage is increasing by thousandth while it should be by hundredth the remaining time is increasing. However when the percentage jumps to the next percent it is normally decreasing below what it was after the previous jump. At least if the total estimated run time of the WU was not too far from reality. |

I just checked my current HCC work unit. Progress was at 68.253%. I watched and watched. Eventually it changed to 68.313%. HCC is running an outer loop that keeps doing more and more refined work, so each loop takes more time. At start, I remember that the HCC progress percentage increases quickly in smaller steps.
Next I looked at the time to completion. That changed more quickly. At first it would add an occasional second, then it would suddenly drop a number of seconds. So the clock is working on my HCC workunit. Is there some common peculiarity where it is not? Lawrence |
