BOINC OK for Laptop?

I recall from my UD days that it was recommended to not run the agent on a laptop, I think because of problems with it overheating the processor.

Is this still an issue with BOINC? I have one laptop I'd like to use it on, but sure don't want to unduly stress the unit to do so. Thanks.

Install BOINC. Set your throttle to like 60-70%. Download speedfan.. Run Speedfan while BOINC is in use - you will be able to tell if your processor temp is running too high.

If you use speedfan (recommended) you can also use ThreadMaster to handle the throttle. The built-in BOINC throttle is clunky.

Re: BOINC OK for Laptop?

I have found that in my Lenovo (IBM) Thinkpad laptop that in addition to running it in the 60-70% range I also must run the Core 2 Duo processor in adaptive mode rather than maximum power mode.

In adaptive mode the processor runs slower when there is no work to be done, like during the 30-40% of the time BOINC is told not to run thereby allowing the processor to cool down smile . When running in maximum power mode the processor continues at full speed and gets hot even though BOINC is only using it 60-70% of the time skull .

There are also some simple physical things that some laptops may take advantage of:

Elevate it on a pie rack so that air can get in.

If drawers are open, like a CD drawer, air can flow through those.

There are also some external coolers made for laptops.

Re: BOINC OK for Laptop?

Excellent suggestions, retsoff.

My ThinkPad T40 had run UD Grid all out 24x7 for over 3 yr till it closed and has since done likewise here under BOINC with no ill effects whatsoever, even at ambient temps approaching the max specified, 95F, for weeks on end.
