Looks like seti@home is still #1 and contains more then 50% of the computational power on BOINC on average.
Todays Statistics 11/30/2007 Average floating point operations per second 350,033.5 GigaFLOPS / 350.034 TeraFLOPS BOINC Combined Statistics Average floating point operations per second 739,141.7 GigaFLOPS / 739.142 TeraFLOPS World Community Grid comes in #2 with around 12% of BOINC computational power. Average floating point operations per second 90,882.5 GigaFLOPS / 90.882 TeraFLOPS http://boincstats.com/ |

Since SETI has been around for lots more years than WCG, I am wOOting it up that after 3 yrs we are in 2nd!

Since SETI has been around for lots more years than WCG, I am wOOting it up that after 3 yrs we are in 2nd! World Community Grid ROCKS! Yes we do rock and it's great we're in 2nd! I just wish more people would utilize their very precious computational resources for something a bit more immediate, tangible, and of great benefit to humanity (here). |

Ok Tavis Smiley ;) But yeah, I wonder how long it will take before the WCG surpasses SETI? It's encouraging to see the WCG getting the most new BOINC hosts/users per day on most days: http://boincstats.com/. At the current rate it'll be at least 2 years, but let's hope it'll be sooner than that.

New cancer project(s) are kicking in. I think that will help a lot.

Looks like seti@home is still #1 and contains more then 50% of the computational power on BOINC on average. it never seems to amaze me that (so called) inteligent people are wasting their computer power (which they are freely to do so) for idiotic projects! let me explain: Star Trek VIII - The First Contact tells just that, what if the signal was send by the Borgs? or by the Klingons? or by the Romulans? and the premis that "all superior & inteligent species are not fond of war" is a stupid one! just look at the last century? ** Edited for Intolerance ** our history is full of SUPERIORITY thinking, no mather which is our nationality, no mather which is our country...yet we choose not to learn from it! that is sad... ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by TKH at Dec 14, 2007 4:27:16 PM] |

ATM even the newest van Alan antenna can not look further than 500 light years to discern any form of 'organized' signal, so if 'they' exist, those signals should have long reached us.... they have not.
----------------------------------------As for Seti, the young generation with home PCs were the ones starting the move, but as it is now, all other projects are growing at a much faster pace as they are. In fact, looking at the curve, they have been tailing off since late November. WCG's focal point is much directed at educating colleges. At least when those students go out in the world they'll be carrying the message of Distributed Computing for a good cause, so give it time and the sciences pertaining to anything on earth will far outstrip space-gazing.

My thinking is that ten years ago, when distributed computing was on the "fringe," a relatively far out discipline (SETI) was needed to be the first to embrace, and push the limits of, distributed computing. As the technology has become increasingly improved and widespread, it seems that it will only be a matter of time before more mainstream efforts (disease research) surpass those fringe projects in terms of computing power. In this sense, I don't think it's necessary to bash SETI users, for it might be argued that they are responsible for bringing distributed computing to where it is today.. Let's just say that that SETI has gotten close to tapping their reserves, while the WCG has only captured a small slice of a potentially much larger body of crunchers.
